We are having real trouble in contacting the DSN for advice on our Grandson George's Type 1 diabetes, only recently diagnosed (6 weeks) he is 4.
The phone number given constantly goes to voice mail, no return call.
I don't blame the poor nurse, I believe she is responsible for 300 children in the area. As we are new to this, many issues with George's blood counts & other things are confusing to us, we have been promised diet sheets, carb count leaflets & other help.

The DSN in our group practice does not wish to get involved because he is so young, bloods are so high sometimes, it is a big worry for us.
Would contacting the PCT help or can anyone advise a way to go?
Someone out there will have been down this road before & may be able to help.

This is posted with the full consent of his Mum & Dad, they too have tried numerous times to get help through the given phone number.

Thanks, Geoff & Callie.

I suggest you might try contacting the receptionist at your clinic, or the consultant's secretary to explain your concerns and ask that they get someone to call you as soon as possible.

Second this idea.
The treatment of your Grandson is a disgrace 😡

Not On. Not with anyone, but absolutely reprehensible for a child.

Do what's been said and also contact PALS and COMPLAIN.

If it doesn't get resolved PDQ then there's your local councillor AND your MP (or rather his parents')

If they don't know one person is looking after 300 kids then it's high time they did and made SUCH a fuss about it, it gets resolved.

Depending where you live it might be worth trying to get a referral to a specialist clinic. I have seen good reports about Great Ormond Street (works with a number of London teaching hospitals) and Royal Manchester Children?s Hospital. There is also a centre of expertise in Sheffield. Others will know of more specialist clinics.

It may also be worth contacting NHS direct (http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/) and/or the Diabetes UK Careline (0845 120 2960 Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm) for some support/guidance in the meantime

can't add to advice, but hope you get help and support you need.

My little feller has a different set of problems, but we too are chasing everyone we can think of to get help and support, so I know it is a worry and a trial at times.

Hi, very sorry to hear this, especially given his age :( Whilst it doesn't help with the DSN problem, are you aware of the book Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas? This may help to clear up some the things you are unsure about and reduce your worries. Also, the group Children with Diabetes are another good source of support. I hope you can get the situation sorted so that you have better access to the DSN, no doubt this is also affecting other parents in your area - is there any way you might be able to get together to put additional pressure on the PCT to provide a better quality service?

Our thanks to all who have replied with tips & ideas.
Did not know about the Book Type 1 in Children, we
have ordered a copy. We will update when we have
more positive news hopefully.🙂

Hi Geoff

I am a member of Children with Diabetes. There are hundreds of knowledgable parents (mainly mums, some dads) on there who you can ask any questions.

May I ask you, are you under the Hull Royal Hospital? I'm asking, because as far as I know they only have 1 DSN with over 300 kids. We are there and they only have 1, because the other one has gone on long term sick. But I also know that they are looking for another DSN and am hoping they'll find one soon. I feel really sorry for the DSN having to deal with all those kids on her own. I rarely bother ringing these days.

Hi Monica, we are in the Wirral area. Thank you for the reply, we are
looking at groups who may be of help to us & we to them hopefully.

Good luck, I hope you find a local support group. We have one and apparently, at the next meeting there will be DUK representatives to help us organise a campaign to to try to ensure local children have the best service possible.
