Had my first appt since starting insulin 28 September and have been really proud of my new low BG figures. Averages have decreased for 7,14 and 30 days from
11.8, 10.7 and 16.2 to current levels of 6.7, 7.7 and 8.7. Mornings now mostly in the 5s as are before lunch, 4s befotre dinner and 6-7 before bed.
However I am honest in my diary and I have had the very occasional high reading which I can explain - although I did not really expect half a small packet of chocolate covered raisins to shoot me up to 19.4!!! However 6 hours later at bedtime I was back to 6.5.

Did I get told off - wow!!!!😱 Felt like a little child at school being on the naughty chair. She virtually said no point doing Hb test in 4 weeks due to this reading - did I not realise the harm I was doing? Quite honestly having had levels in the high 20s and low 30s before getting onto insulin when I was terrified of the harm I might be doing to myself and receiving nothing but platitudes from her I just wasn't bothered about the odd high which I could explain. These usually however have previously only been in the 10-11 mark and there have been 3 times in total since the start of injecting.

Now can you knowledgeable folk help me with some truths please.

Ask your practice nurse (she aint no dsn) to point you in the direction to a diabetic with perfect control with the body to match 😡 Silly moo springs to mind.
Ask her for some rapid insulin so you can eat some extra bits and bobs without the food police coming after you regarding an occasional high number.

Personally I think you have done fantasticly well to achieve what you have. So a big well done from me.

May be a bit of hassel to start with but have you thought of buying some dark chocolate melting it and coating some nuts in it? This way in theory you shouldn't get a spike like that again.
Other option is to go for a nice walk whilst eating the treat this again in theory should bring down your numbers.

Have got a bar in the fridge for a treat for when I am under (reasonable) control. Great idea - so I can do my own chocolate brazils!! Had told OH he can now give me the chocs he wouldn't give me last Xmas on the proviso he makes sure I have only 1 after dinner a day. It will be a looooong xmas!!

I agree with Sue, this nurse obviously skimmed through the chapter on what an HbA1c represents! 🙄 The odd high reading will have minimal (if any) impact on an HbA1c, so to suggest there is 'no point' in doing one because of your occasional flirtation with the chocolate-coated raisin devil is plain silly. (By the way, raisins are little powerhouses of sugar, nuts would definitely be better!)

You are doing terrifically well, I would ignore this nonsense and maybe ask her to explain in detail next time what an HbA1c actually measures 😉
