Could you please advise me how we go about applying for a provisional driving licence for a type 1? Do we just fill the standard form in and send that off, or do we need to get any sort of special form, or letter from GP/DSN/Consultant? My son has just announced he wants to apply for his, not for driving he tells me(!) but for ID purposes! I'm sure he does want to learn, but he has little money towards it a the moment. I won't go out of my way to get a form from the Post Office if that isn't the way forward. Thanks, any help appreciated.

If I remember rightly, you use the standard form which will have a medical questionaire on it.. He needs to fill this out, I know he need a GP/Consultant duffer to say that he has good control of his diabetes etc..

Mind you I would be carefull though as in October the rules change slightly for diabetics, revolking the licence seems to be a lot swifter and once revolked it seems that you won't get it back..

If he's had an major hypo's in the last 12 months that's required 3rd party (basically paramedic/hospital help admission) then he might be wiser to wait until he's cleared 12 months of good control with no 3rd party help...

All my 3 had their provisional licences for their 18th so for ID purposes, so far only my oldest has actually learn't to drive the other two are umemployed at the moment..

If he's looking for ID check out the council/local police station as I'm sure local council/police can issues a local ID to confirm there age if for any reasons an individual can not hold a driving licence..

Just to mention that a T1s driving license doesn't last as long as a 'normal' one. They have to be renewed every few years (so that your medical team can be asked whether you are still OK)

had a driving licence for over 10 years now. I get mine for 3 years at a time, before I have to reapply giving all my medical info and dates seen GP, diabetes consultant etc, and then get a new licence. it is a pain, but I can understand why they do it.

And I think it's a great idea for ID purposes - so much smaller, and less valuable than a passport!

It's got nothing to do with the type of diabetes! A restricted licence (usually 3yrs) is given to well controlled diabetics who are on insulin.

Sorry Vicsetter, didn't mean to offend and wasn't meaning to be type-ist, just replying in-line with the type of the OP 😱

Also, bear in mind, when we applied for driving licences, there WERE only T1 or T2 and there were no recognised overlaps. Thankfully things have progressed now.🙂

I think I had 2 additional sets of forms which I had to go to the hospital clinic to get signed by the consultant.

Shouldn't be a problem getting issued with a provisional licence provided your control is good. DVLA issue them for a one, two and three year period depending on medical reports and what you write on the form, if you have had problems with your eyes and needed laser surgery then a field vision test will be required before a decision is made.

Ok thanks everyone for your replies. So do we just send in the form alone with the medical questionnaire filled in and wait for them to request something specific, or do we also approach the consultant/GP now and ask for something to be put in writing suitable to be sent to the DVLA. Thanks.

The DVLA will contact your GP/consultant directly if they want extra info. The form asks for consent to do this, as far as I remember.🙂

But would do no harm to approach GP as well if you want to discuss recent concerns.🙂

Thats a good suggestion. I nearly didn't get mine renewed in time this year as the DVLA sent the query to my GP and she was on holiday so it got left until the last minute.

You can down load the medical form from the DVLA I think.
