example for high cholesterol will give
fish oils or female problems will give
black cohash

i think i like this better you are not taking alot
of medicines for different things
just found it curious never ran into it before

he is an md went to some good schools maybe this
is part of the teaching now

has anyone ran into this before

thanks

That seems very odd Mary. Is he an NHS GP ?

It sounds like 'alternative' therapies which would need to be backed by evidence of eficacy and would need to be approved by NICE too I should think.

I've no idea about the ethics of it but I wouldn't want to be prescribed something unless I can be sure it is safe and effective.

Is this an NHS GP? If not - what exactly are his qualifications?

Depends which components of cholesterol you need to attack, doesn't it, and also what's causing them to be too high or too low, as to what's going to fix it.

Black Cohash is supposed to be good for certain menopausal symptoms I'll give you that - however if the root cause of what you've got is fibroids - or worse! - cancer or an ectopic pregnancy, you'd be no better off or dead.

As I have a condition that can't be treated with anything that isn't injected insulin ...... apart from the other stuff I have treated with other appropriate medications - I'd be disgusted if I heard a doctor telling me something 'natural' would work for any of it, frankly.

I've just realised Mary, that you're in the US, in which case I wouldn't have any idea what the rules are but I would still want evidence that what he's prescribing will actually have positive results. There are a lot of herbal or alternative treatments that have been shown to be of no medical use and some can be dangerous in certain situations.🙂

ps. Mary, if you'd like to place your location in your profile, it would help other members to know that you're not referring to the UK NHS.

These sound like complimentary medicines. I didn't think black cohosh, for example, is available on NHS prescription (it's not in the British National Formulary) and NHS data reports that it is not a recommended treatment.
WHilst it is prescribable by US doctors it is classed as a herbal drug and hasn't been through the strict clinical trials that 'normal prescription drugs' do (see http://www.drugs.com for details of all your drugs). For instance I couldn't find a list of known interactions with other drugs (which is worrying).

Just because a 'treatment' is herbal or natural doesn't mean it is good for you or won't do you harm, do your research.

Sorry Mary its not something that happens here.

I am not sure whether you are querying the treatment, the Dr or both. If you have concerns as to whether the Dr is qualified then I think you should contact your state medical board and they will be able to confirm his/her status.

that was what i wondered if safe

i took the black cohash for about a month did not do anything for me

put me on the fish oil about six weeks ago have been taking it but can not tell if it is doing anything

have a friend down in texas has to do some chemothearpy had to have a breast removed about three weeks ago and they told her get off of it and the black cohash also

dr is a gp has been in town here for about 15 yrs

i am not one to take stuff that has not been tested where i can see results

i just wondered if anyone had ran across this before thanks

Hi Mary, it may be worth checking to see what board or council governs medicine in the USA and contacting them to see what guidelines they have, it seems odd to me, but i am also uk based, my opinion would be that complementary therapies may be used in addition to general medicine but only when they have been tested safe and do not contradict the effects of the licensed medicine

Alternative meds

I am unable to take cholestral drugs due to another condition and only 1 part is quite high but being diabetic they want you to have the meds I did have fish oils prescribed but could not take them
