Hi,if anbody can help me I would appreciate it.I have levemir twice a day and novorapid with meals.

I seem to have good blood sugars until about 5am and then it just goes up.

Last night at 10.00pm I was 7mmol,at 3.00am I was 7.1,at 4.00am I was 6.9mmol.

Then I fell asleep again and woke up at 7.30am when my blood sugar was 12.4.

Is this DP or do I need more levemir?.

I take 18 units at 10.pm and 12 units at 10.00am.I am high every morning, usually between 12-15 mmol.

It does sound like DP, Daisy :( I doubt that throwing more levemir will solve it as it is related to your 'cortisol awakening response'. You could try having a small protein snack before bed, or when you wake as some people find this 'switches' off the response. From your readings it sounds unlikely that you are having a rebound from night hypos, and particularly since it happens every night.

I'm lucky not to suffer from DP much, but hopefully others will have some practical suggestions that might help 🙂

This happens everynight,I don't think it is from going low either.I woke up last night so I though I would test ,I test about once a week in the night and I have never been low.

Can DP make your blood sugar go up that much in such a short space of time.I normally get up at about 6.45am but as kids are off school I have woken up a bit later.I usually test as soon as I wake up ,inject and leave it 20 minutes before eating breakfast.I stay high until about 10.00am.

I suppose I could have breakfast at 5.00am, No I don't think so actually.

Sounds like it, and taking more Levemir wouldn't help, as you can see your dose is doing its job of holding you steady...........

I used to take my Levemir on a 12 hour split, but now I take my evening dose 2 hours later, this leaves me with more Levemir in my system in the morning, and it works most of the time..........

The issue that may arise is your daytime dose running out, so you may need to compensate with higher Novo ratio at dinner/supper time......

Also, eating something will turn of the DP effect............so simply injecting and not eating will not work..........

Everyone is different though, so go forth and test............:D

It sounds like you are doing everything right, testing and injecting as you wake and letting the insulin get going before eating. Unfortunately, if the late night protein snack doesn't work then the only real solution is a pump, where you could set different basal rates, but I think you've be very lucky to get one as a Type 2 :(

Thanks I will try having a snack tonight and see if that works,if not I don't suppose there is alot I can do.

I did ask about a pump but was told that it probably wouldn't happen. At least I know I am not high all night long.

I'd pusue that i bit further Daisy Dp was one of the reasons i got a pump 😉

I have this problem too and it's annoying. Once all the "out of routine" stuff is ended I will give these suggestions a try. Thank you.

Yes that is what I thought, the next few days will be hard anyway.I've had two low blood sugars today so don't really mind if it is a bit higher tonight.I hate having high blood sugar in the morning though,it infuriates me.

Do you wake up with headaches Daisy ? that could be a sign of going low/hypo during the night so causing dp ?

No ,hardly ever have headaches, don't think i go low at night as when i test I am not low.I only went low today as I was really busy rushing around. It always seems to be about 5am when my blood sugar starts to go up and then doesn't know when to stop.
