Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all..went into hospital and was found to have a trapped gallstone. The blood tests revealed that I also have type 2. Not the best month I've ever had !! Big lifestyle changes ahead I think now I've got over the initial shock..

Welcome from a fellow T2 whose 18 months in. Yep, I've just hit a year and a half.

I hit the big 50 this year and I've got some major events that I'm planning for next to celebrate..a half and then full marathon are a couple of them. The training that I need to put it will certainly help with my weight as long as I can get my head round the dietary do's and dont's. Add that to my low fat diet that I need to follow for my gallbladder issue...it's a minefield but I'm sure I'll find my way through it..

Well if I were you I'd consult the 'Runsweet' website as they are just the best for any diabetic athletes. (Loughborough Uni, instrumental with althletics like for ever (from way back when they were a Poly! LOL) and had always partnered Leicester Uni Med School anyway, so this was just an extension of that, but in a more direct manner. They are said to have been instrumental helping Steve Redgrave become SIR Steve LOL - ie with his continued sporting prowess after his T2 diagnosis. Pretty good advert for their expertise I'd say.

Plus I should imagine would be able to tailor advice to sit comfortably within the gall bladder issue.

Finally Owwww - at least diabetes isn't painful ! LOL Did they zap it with ultrasound?

Welcome aboard. You've found the best place for advice and support.🙂

Welcome the 50's group. I'm 52. :(

Thank you so much for your replies. All very new, only found out on Thursday...I'm also on the gruel diet as of pretty much now...mmmm, mung bean smoothie, can't wait. Re the gallstone, gallbladder has to come out so I'm told. It's been a very interesting month, something that I really don't want to repeat. Good living here we come, now where are my trainers and protein shaker !! Next year I'm doing (or have planned to) the pen y fan race, Silverstone half marathon, London marathon (I've got a place as I had to defer from this year) the paras 10 and a standard distance triathlon. I should be fitter than a big bag of fit things so hopefully this will go some way to sorting things out. I guess I've found another charity to add to my list...

Runsweet website is mainly for people with type 1 diabetes on insulin. It's excellent on physiology or exercise, but mainly in relation to insulin treatment.
For people with type 2 diabetes, Team Blood Glucose is probably more useful - see http://www.teambloodglucose.com/TeamBG/Type_2_Basics.html
Sounds like a busy year ahead - some big ticket races there. For something a bit cheaper (free, actually), you could see if there's a parkrun (5km timed runs at 9am or 9.30am on Saturday) near you http://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/ (map is a bit slow to load, as there are lots of events)

Sorry to hear about your double whammy. After 45 years with it I can say that life with diabetes can be great 🙂

LOL - I may know a bit about my diabetes - but you can easily tell I'm not an exercise expert !!

Cheers. Yes, that's also on the cards. A few of the lads from work do the park runs. But as today is my last day off work I shall put the touring cars on the telly instead while sipping on a delicious broccoli and kale smoothie....this really can't go on....

Welcome to the forum Steve. 🙂 That's a great comment from AJ - all we seem to hear about, particularly in the media, regarding diabetes is doom and gloom but there are lots of us who have had diabetes a fair while and are living perfectly normal lives. It's certainly a very manageable condition and for lots of people it means a focus on healthier eating and more exercise - not a bad thing. 🙂

Thanks, it's nice to have so much support already. I don't really think it's sunk in yet to be honest. But my attitude is to crack on and don't let this get in the way. I have a demanding job and we don't have allocated meal times etc, very much eat on the hoof. A bit of self discipline and management is called for, eat properly (no more Greggs) and regularly and I should be fine. The doc gave metformin straight away as my reading was so high (81) but this should come down with the changes I need to make. I have spent hours on this site reading the different forums and taking in the advice..Next stop is back with the consultant re my gallbladder which is coming out and then back in with my local diabetes nurse to see how I'm doing...character building stuff as we used to say...

Hi and welcome to forum

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm 10 months into diagnosis but I'm an oddball MODY! I do 5km, 10km, 25km, half and full marathon distances. But I'm a walker rather than a runner. This forum is great for help and advice.
