Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Do many of you guys have a secondary condition to diabetes?

Not personally (that I am aware of), but I do know that diabetes (especially Type 1 as an autoimmune disease) often goes hand-in-hand with Coeliac disease and hypothyroidism, Interestingly, my Dad has psoriasis, which is autoimmune in origin, so perhaps that's where I get my duff genes from 🙄

Yes thanks how many would you like to borrow? :D

I suffer from depression aswell but keep it in check with meds ... 😉 are you having other issues/conditions aswell to deal with ?

I've only had short term ailments such as frozen shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome but the clock's still ticking so I might win something else yet. 🙄

As yet, all the 'innards' are behaving (apart from the beta cells). And I've not had any skin problems apart from prickly heat when I was younger but I'm not sure if that's linked or not. And I grew out of it.🙂

I also have FH [familial hypercholesterolaemia]a genetic disorder characterized by high cholesterol levels. It does mean that I have been watching my diet ever since being diagnosed, which has helped with my BG control

I have had cellulitis a couple of times. from the information I have read as people with diabetes, we are more likely to get cellulitis from time to time. I don't thik it is an auto immune think but it is (naughty words here) uncomfortable.

Carpal tunnel, frozen shoulders, gastroparesis, maculopathy, retinal vein occlusion and glaucoma. I think that's it:D

My son has primary lymphoedema in his legs, makes him prone to infection and fibrotic tissue.

Apart from the D, I am fighting fit.................😉

Can't say I have any conditions because of diabetes, have plenty that mostly came on before I started with it.

Interestingly, two meds I am on, one for high BP, the other for irregular heartbeat are listed in a book I got saying that by taking them together, it could bring on diabetes.

Apart from that, although I consider myself healthy, I had my digestive and heart things before diagnosis with this and have had regular blood tests for over 30 years so know it is not a case of diabetes was missed. I didn't have it. But, in the family so was always going to get it - if I lived that long!!!!

My daughter has underactive thyroid (which as others have mentioned is autoimmune like T1) discovered at her first annual review. She also has bilateral cataracts caused by her diabetes diagnosed around the time of her diabetes Dx.
She is also currently suffering from anxiety and depression (awaiting treatment) which isn't surprising really:(

Oh and she also has 'hammer' toes, just for good measure. 🙄

I also have hypothyroidism (which was diagnosed before D) and now it seems gastroparesis. I also have IBS and a heart murmur but not D related as far as I know!

As dad didn't have any of the typical diabetes symptoms (still doesn't even if his readings go below 4) he was diagnosed with a damaged mitral valve due to unchecked high blood pressure (he didn't like Drs! It was only the stress of mum having MND which eventually saw dad going to see the Dr and being admitted to hospital immediately) the medication he takes for this resulted in his tendency to Gout plus the Dr feels that the meds 'may' also have a bearing on the fact he has diabetes now. We don't really know but there may be a link of side effects from medication which is under review now. It's only via SMBG we know what his levels are as dad doesn't feel any different. Complicated :/

I actually feel low BG symptoms more than dad!

Hi Amanda
I have asthma (since teens), underactive thyroid (for 3 yrs) and an auto-immune skin disease, Lichen Sclerosis, (for 14yrs). Interestingly, when I was diagnosed with the skin disease, the Dermatology doctor asked me if I had any problems with my thyroid or diabetes, or any incidence of these diseases in my family!! Of course, I had none, and said no. But here I am 14yrs on with both! xx Isabel

I've had Colitis since I was a teenager.

I have a whole collection! The big three are the Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Addison's Disease. I had the RA first, then Addison's. Diabetes is a latecomer to the party.

Very grateful to have none related to type 1 🙂

I do have various issues that flare up that I feel are connected to type 1 - a prime one being anxiety related to control, which I feel is linked to my desire to control my type 1 as best as I can.
