Afternoon guys and gals

do any of you double inject after you have had pasta for an evening meal? i eat quite late, had spag bol with the bf, and before i went to bed it was 7.3, so i left it cus i didnt want to go hypo in the night, and woke up this morning and its was 27!!!!!! how do you handle such food as pasta as it doesnt bring your sugars up til AAAAGES after youve eaten it!!

any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

xxxx

I used to struggle with going hypo then going high later on, but now I inject either half or two thirds of my NovoRapid at the time of eating and then inject the rest around half an hour later.

Only tried it once so far but it did the trick, hope next time you don't get the dreaded highs! 🙂

Hi hellbell.

I haven't as yet but know that I should 🙄

I would imagine the fat and the meat in spag bol would stretch the delay even further than the pasta. If it was wholegrain pasta, even more so.

I know Everydayupsanddowns has recently had success with split dosing. I'm guessing you had a goodly plateful (and who wouldn't :D) to send your BG up that high by morning. I don't like the fact that insulins are designed for one set response but food has a habit of infinite variability.

No expert on this and have no experience of split dosing but am really surprised by the size of the jump. Think my eyes would pop out if I saw that.

Where your hands squeeky clean when you tested in the morning?

Hi HellBell

It's an approach I regularly use for larger meals.

I seem able to get away with even notoriously tricky foods if I keep the carb count down to 60g CHO, but over that and it can all go horribly wrong.

As Emma (Teapot) said, my problem came from dosing for the whole meal upfront where the insulin worked too fast (hypo) and then ran out too soon (later rise following hypo correction). Splitting 'spread' the activity of the insulin.

Rob asked me about fish and chips the other day on the 7-day waking thread:

And I posted about it on our blog after getting a useful tip on these here boards... New big meal strategy: Thirds

There might be something there to add into your own experiments?

Everyone has dif methods of dealing with pasta, so you need to experiment to see what suits you best.
I'm on a pump so would have normal amount of insulin as per normal then 2hours later I would divide the bolus I had had by 3 and extend over 4 hours.

I used to increas my basal when on MDI to cope with a pasta meal or high fat meal. Which worked for me.

I think it would definitely be worth trying a split dose. With pasta & pizza I bolus around half the dose as I start eating, then the other half an hour or so later. I still rise a little bit more than with most foods (I'm still fine-tuning), but it's a lot better than bolusing all at once!

I get a quick rise, which approx 50% of what the bolus ought to be covers that, my main prob is the next hit is 5 or 6 hours later, normally after I've gone to bed.

The only way I've found is to adjust the amount of pasta down and down and down till it is only worth approx 40g CHO, when a half first and half 2hours later will deal with it.

The only way I find best to cover meals such as spag bol is to give 2/3 of the dose before and the rest 90mins to 2hours later.

When I was on MDI I used to split my dose worked very well for me, but I don't eat a large portion of pasta though only around 30-40g of carbs worth..

I actually wonder by your large BG increase whether you actually went hypo over night and had a liver dump rather than the true effect of the pasta!

Another thing I've found I started to make my own pasta, and this home-made pasta tends to have a gentiler effect on my bg..

But a lot is experiementing to find what works for you best, and I do personally feel if you want large portions of pasta you'll always going to struggle with it though
