A Facebook friend of a friend has posted that her dog has just been diagnosed and she wishes she could speak to someone else who has experience of this. Can anyone help? If any one has such experience I will pass on the link to the person concerned. Thank you.

I wish I could help @Flutterby
I am sure someone will be along shortly
All I know is that you can buy specialist Dog DIabetic foods but that is the limit of my knowledge

I had a friend (I have many friends) whose dog developed diabetes, I believe type one and he treated it in almost the same way as humans. Inject insulin twice daily balanced diet. Had to clean dog's teeth regularly to prevent infections. Dogs are prone to cataracts and urinary tract infections and the treatments were expensive so hope your friend has insurance.

Yep, Karen - Dave's correct! In the 1970s I worked with a chap whose dog was diabetic - and on exactly the same insulin as me - Wellcome Foundation Ultralente (porcine) one jab a day. The main prob he had was chasing her round the garden every morning with a saucer to catch her wee to test! With Clinistix, obviously, and the accompanying dropper and test tube and tablets, to boil it up - fortunately you and I both had a bathroom LOL

Correct me if I'm wrong Jenny but wasn't the way they found out that a sick dog had diabetes was to observe it's urine and see if flies swarmed to it attracted by the high sugar content in the urine. I'm talking centuries ago. I've also read that 'water tasters' were employed to taste the urine of people suspected of having the condition.
I'm now researching the origins of my sweet pees in the garden🙂

Don't want to disappoint you in your quest about those pretty climbers but I have a feeling you will discover they are in the large family of leguminous plants AKA peas LOL

GPs have been known to diagnose men in the past who they saw had white spots on otherwise beautifully polished leather shoes - the residue of sugar that lands there in urine accidentally, you know when. I believe you're correct though about further back - the ancient Greeks knew about diabetes AKA the sugar disease.

Not that I know of Pishpash. I am actually off to bed now but will pass on the link to the lady concerned, she seems very nice. PS welcome to the forum.

It seems that the person concerned has spoken with the vet and feels better about things now. Thank you for offering help but I think it is unlikely they will come on here.

That's ok, so long as she is happy. A shame though, I have some supplies that she could have had for the cost of the postage, would have saved her a fortune. Thank you for letting me know.
