Hi
I am.back after lengthy delay. I hope all are ok. I saw a friend a fortnight ago who said she stopped taking metformin and her weight went down from 185kg to 150kg. She said Metformin makes your belly larger. She hasnt told her GP. I halved my dose to see if there is an effect....I know I should know better.....anyone else share that view on Met

I am going back to my prescribed dose. I realise I am guilty of overating slightly before I take Metf, which is incorrect.
Has anyone heard of Food Addictions FA group. I am going to one to see what's like

Hi. I believe Metformin was originally designed to aid weight loss before they discovered it helped us.
I was on it for years with no probs.

I've not heard of them , do let us know what you think.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the terms "belly" and "stomach"?
Stomach size doesn't usually change with metformin, but stomach is part of gastro intestinal tract, and metformin can cause excess wind, so lower intestine (usually) can become full of wind and cause farting. Perhaps that's what you mean by enlarged belly?
As Ljc says, metformin more usually causes weight loss (or at least stops increase) than increase, so perhaps your friend's experience relates to other things like eating more or exercising less?
I don't have any personal experience of Food Addicts group, so would be interested in hearing about your experiences, @rustee2011.

Thanks for that. I made a typo I meant overeating rather than overating. I looked and couldn't find that statement about Metf either.
I would not consider that drastic step without consulting my GP. Diabetes should be taken seriously - no joke. I realised my weight gain was due to the anti-histamines increasing my appetite (I cope with hayfever, and in early June my face looked like a cricket ball was shoved in it).
Glad I brought it up with the forum

Now regarding the swelling, Dr put me on the anti-histamines and I was taken off perindopril, as this was found to have caused the swelling.
Now I take the anti-histamines with me and only use it IF I need to as advised.
Getting there, steadily

How is your friend now, rustee2011?
You're wise not to change prescribed medication dose without discussing with GP or pharmacist.
Sorry to hear about your hayfever - hope it's easier now there is less pollen around?

She is very well. We had that discussion as she drinks - I do not. Yet both of us were told our Kidneys are leaking a little protein. So she said she believed it was the Metf and she stopped taking it. This was last year - The side effects were tough. Vomitting and toilet. However, she said since that time her weight has gone down and she feels healthier. If it works for her then great. I know she went to a private Doctor, so she has some insight.
