Hi there

I'm new here and don't have diabetes myself but my mother-in-law was diagnosed a few years ago. She has been controlling it with diet and medication and has now been told that she may have developed intestinal cancer. She's due to go for further tests in 4 weeks.

Apparently one of the possible side effects of one of her diabetes meds is intestinal cancer. Do any of you know what med it might be?

I don't want to ask her outright as she doesn't really want to talk about it but I want to research things as much as possible so that I can help her as much as possible.

hi phone monkey sorry i cant help with your question , but welcome to the forum and all the best to your M-I-L

Hi phonemonkey!

Welcome to the forum!

Your query isnt something I know about, or have even heard of in relation to diabetes. With this in mind, just be careful what you research on the net as you cant always authenticate exactly what you find out as Im sure you already know.

It may be that your mother-in-law has other factors in her health clinically that had put her at greater risk of intestinal cancer that she got and not as a direct link to diabetes. If she has been treating her diabetes with diet and excercise and no medications she may have been very well controlled.

If this were me I think I would be challenging the healthcare team that are looking after her. With such a big diagnosis, you need to be empowered with knowledge so that you can understand what is going on and why, not just given a diagnosis.

Sorry I cant be of help here.

Take care, and of course- wishing your mother-in-law all the best.

Lou

Can't asnwer your question, but diabetes UK might be able to offer some suggestions or try NHS direct. If they can't answer they might be able to point you in the right direction.

I hope all goes well with mother in law. A friend had intestinal cancer, he was off work for a long time post op but is on the mend now and has gone back to work part time.

Thanks ...

... for your responses.

If it's something none of you have heard of, then it seems unlikely that if it is cancer, it's as a result of meds.

I'll continue my investigations!

Thanks again and all the best to you all.

What is mum in law taking? If she is using metformin and not eating properly it will give her an upset tummy. I found that out the hard way. The investigations will confirm what you think and treatment can begin or it will re-assure everyone nothing more serious than a reaction to the medication is happening.

I don't know what she's taking. She doesn't really talk about her health etc and I'm loathe to ask her right now because she's feeling a bit fragile about the whole thing.

DH took her to the hospital earlier so that she could re-arrange an appointment so I'll find out later if she's said anymore about it.
