This thread reminds me of that old 'joke'

Question : What do you call the guy who came last in final year medical school ?

Answer : Doctor

yes totally ...and my DSN ..but I am aware that I am very lucky

I find it very hard to trust my GP's at all and not just from my diabetes treatment from them. They misdiagnosed my dad many years ago which resulted in him having a miserable time and sadly dying at the age of 69. They then neglected my mum and her problems were only dealt with properly when she saw a locum who sent her to hospital where she died 2 weeks later at the age of 76. They were treating her for anaemia (and told me that she was attention seeking) and she died of multiple organ failure. Their answer to everything seems to be a smug smile and the instruction to 'come back in a month if it's no better.'

Some of you know of the problems I had earlier this year when I contacted them because I was having extremely high readings out of the blue (28 to 33 being typical no matter what I did) and was told to just wait til my HbA1c as they didn't support me self testing! Then they didn't want to refer me to the hospital either.

The Practice Nurse is a personal friend. She's a lovely lady and means well but her knowledge is very limmited. I usually tell her what I think and she agrees with me. XXXXX

I trust my GP who acknowledges she does not know everything and is perfectly happy to look things up or refer me on to someone who does.

Practice nurse - nope! didn't trust the one before her either but am stuck. No DSN ever seen, no diabetes specialist ever seen but I have things under control - thanks to this excellent, wonderful, brilliant forum.

Several of you have mentioned that you changed your doctor but in this area - Gloucestershire - that's not possible. There are catchment areas and one practice only in each area. They refuse patients from other catchment areas.

I would love to change to another practice.

My sister used to live in Gloucestershire so I sympathise, she encountered the worst treatment she has ever experienced there and since moving back here has been told by our practice that it was disgraceful and shouldn't have happened.

I understand a Dr Foster once went to Gloucester. Unfortunately it was raining and he had a bad experience with a puddle...sorry, couldn't resist! 😉

That really is dreadful - is it actually allowed under the Patient's Charter?

I have recently changed my doctors, and now I have more faith in them.

My last GP was a nightmare and I am more then certain I did not get the level of care I should of done. If it wasn't for the specilist team at my local hospital, the last few years wouldn't have gone so smoothly!

Sorry to hear about your sister but I'm not surprised at all. Long story and I won't go into details but I SOOO wish I could change.

Like Dr. Foster I go to Gloucester every Saturday to work at the Archives but he was probably lucky never to go there again - a most historic city but almost ruined by redevelopment. The cathedral is glorious though.

I read recently that everyone should have the to right to change doctor but Glos. is taking no notice I'm afraid.

I have a good GP is actually listens to what you have to say, if she isn't sure she will find out, or refer you on to a specialist, she told me one time that it would be better asking my DSN, who I was seeing that week, as she would know much more than she did. I went to see her a week ago, as my speech had stopped progressing after my stroke and I also had to see her to be given the ok to drive again. Anyway, she said no to the driving until I was seen as the TIA clinic to see if I have extended my stroke, she referred me Mon and I was seen on Thurs, I haven't extended my stroke but had a TIA which affected my speech, and no driving for another month..

My DSN I trust, but the Consultant that took over I haven't much faith in him and I have only seen him once, I prefer the other Dr at the clinic to him. The Consultant he replaced was excellent, it is a shame that he retired.

Hi Liz \ all

Since I moved to another Doctors just over a year ago, I have complete trust in my Doctor and DSN.

Prior to moving I never saw the same Doctor twice. The ones I did see looked at me like I had crawled out of a piece of cheese whenever I mentioned anything to do with diabetes.

I remember one trip about a week after I started on insulin. I asked her advice on the dosage. She turned to the computer, logged onto google and searched for 5 minutes then said I would keep taking the dose they recommended at the hospital until you see them in 2 weeks.

Now why didn't I think of that 🙂

Regards

Andy

Don't you just wish you had all their medical training and knowledge? 😉

I like our GP, even though he didn't think I'd have an underactive thyroid. Result came back positive.

He diagnosed Carol's Diabetes quick smart though. And I haven't had any problems with the practice not prescribing what I ask for.

D_G - that's just unbelievable, I thought your DSN was going to have a word with your GP about your strips???

Sorry just noticed this! Yer well my strips havent gone up so i take it he said no 😡 I will pursue this im not going to drop it

That's disgraceful! If the DSN says you need more strips, then he has to give you more strips!!😡

I know I'm not exactly enamoured of my doctor but at least she does what the clinic tells her. Can you get the DSN to write/email your surgery with your requirements? The clinic here give me a form they complete whenever they change my prescription and I take that to the surgery.
