Lemmy from motorhead. (R.I.P). Became diabetic in later life. He drank a bottle of jack daniels everyday with coke. Apparently he did this for 40 years. When he was diagnosed with diabetes he switched his coke to diet. Not recomended but he was a walking miracle. Should've died years ago.
Love motorhead, have you seen the documentary on Netflix "Lemmy" it's well worth a watch.

I drink vodka and diet coke and don't need to take any bolus as no carbs. If I'm having a few (like I did last night ) I do tend to nibble on crisps or something similar to keep me from going low. I have found that when I've had drinks in the evening the next day I don't get problems with dawn phenomenon. I seem to have a very good day with BS levels. Don't know why.

No alcohol has passed my lips since I was 28yrs by then I had partied a lifetimes worth so stopped. Now 56yrs and can't say I have ever missed it, had twins not long after so life just took over.

For me it would depend on what sort of drinking I'm doing. If I was going to the pub for one or two pints and no more, I would bolus for them, otherwise my bs would go shooting up. If I was going out dancing and drinking, I wouldn't bolus, despite drinking more as I would worry about hypos in the early morning / next day. Dont seem to find wine or anything makes much difference, just the beer, which is a shame cos I live opposite an award winning Camra pub.

I've found that 1 small glass of wine with something to eat doesn't affect my sugar levels. If I have two glasses of wine or a double whisky then 4 - 6 hours later my blood sugar will drop and a I need something to eat. I also love dark beers (mild, stout, porter) and those do have carbs, unlike the paler ones. I inject 2 units for 1 pint (so the beer has about 20g carbs per pint) - however, if I have another pint (more than likely) then I don't inject any more. I don't drink more than that as I like to keep clear headed enough to know if anythings wrong. 99% of the time this works for me, I've been type 1 for 47 years. I've had a Libreview sensor for the last couple of years and that's helped massively.

Oh dear, I appear to be the only one here who drinks way too much for my own good. Retirement followed by lockdowns have steered me to much more drinking than before. I can leave it totally alone - dry January for instance but its crept back again. My diet is good and exercise loads but as a diabetic who has never had a hypo I find it hard to reconcile my diabetes and my drinking.

I don’t drink at all these days. 🙂 I gave up because I always go hypo if I drink alcohol. And the usual hypo fixers (juice, JBs, etc) just don’t work until my liver has processed the booze. Since that can take up to an hour, it’s terrifying watching my BG drop and not being able to get it to go back up again, eek!o_O Nowadays, I’m the permanent designated driver - my OH is a very lucky man LOL.

We’re all different tho.😎 It’s a case of trial and error, and having snacks to hand.

What a dude and what a brilliant life he had.
I like real beers and red wine (not together) and usually have a glass or two on Friday or/and Saturday nights. I don't drink during the week.
We avoid alcohol during the week, but a glass of wine is ‘allowed’ if we are watching a programme that was recorded at the weekend!!

How do you manage that!! I am averaging 2 hypos a day at the moment! Do you really mean that your BG never drops below 4 or that you perhaps just never notice or that you have never had a hypo that needed assistance? Even non diabetics drop below 4 sometimes! Do you have Freestyle Libre or just finger pricks in which case you might be missing some. I just find it quite mind blowing when people say they have never had a hypo and I wonder if they run their levels deliberately high to prevent them. Surely as someone who exercises regularly, you must have had one at some point?

Sorry my terminology was loose. I've never needed assistance. I do use Libre and only very rarely go under 4. If I do I can generally feel it and can always catch it (so far). If I'm cycling I fuel up before and eat during the ride. I don't go deliberately high. I realise I have it easy compared to others. Regards, Chris

I used to drink whisky. A lot. I like whisky. It just made me fall asleep. But it was part of the problem that led to my diabetes diagnosis amongst other things.

I haven't touched a drop since the diagnosis and I haven't missed it either. And the extra money from not buying bottles of it has been very welcome.

However, I now have a very small glass of red wine each night as part of my plan to tackle my slightly high cholesterol levels. That was the only problem area identified by the DN after my last blood test.

I' m not that keen on red wine so I don't think there will be any danger of me overdoing it.

It's only part of the plan. I now analyse cholesterol (keeping dietary CH at or slightly below NHS guidelines) and take some plant sterol capsules (natural statin but no side effects)

I wonder if there is a better solution to help reduce cholesterol levels. Any ideas?

You need further experimentation with the red wine @Gwynn :D There are some really delicious ones but also some not so good ones. What kind of tastes do you like - fruity, tannic?

For cholesterol, a plant-based diet eg Nutritarian (Joel Fuhrman) can lower cholesterol (and help other things too, including high blood pressure, diabetes, etc).

I used to drink whisky. A lot. I like whisky.

Odd, once over couldn't stand stuff, recent years acquired taste for it, favourite being being Jameson Irish whisky, have tipple before bed on weekend.

Shame to say, I just grabbed the nicest looking bottle on the Sainsburys shelf!!!

Any suggestions?

Fruity sounds good. Tannic or earthy sounds not so good.

Great subject my favourite , yes I do , best thing about lock down I stand up in the kitchen dressed up, personal house party loll
