I know i will be called an old dinosaur when i say this but - Ladies please could you be careful with the 'bad' language?I do let Alex read some of the posts on here - well those that make him laugh or of any interest to an 11year old! Also there are younger members who dont feel the need to use bad language - so come on - lead by example! My mum used to threaten me that if i swore she would wash my mouth out with soap! Please dont think i'm not a good sport - there is a place for bad language - i do post some jokes with bad language in - but as the saying goes 'there is a time and a place'....😱Bev

I'm very wary of suggestions of letting websites install any software on my computer. I did a few searches on Google and the site suggested does not to appear to have any warnings about it.

I normally use Linux and it's naturally almost immune from malware. I do occasionally run Windoze as the software for my Accu-Chek meter only works under it.

Wikipedia says:
Programs have been developed to detect, quarantine, and remove spyware. As there are many examples of adware software that are also spyware or malware, many of these detection programs have been developed to detect, quarantine, and remove adware as well. Among the more prominent of these applications are Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. These programs are designed specifically for spyware detection and will not detect viruses.

I ran my AVG antivirus scan the other day. It finds loads of adware type stuff, but treats them as 'warnings'. If you allow cookies in Windows (which you probably need to use a lot of sites comfortably) you'll get adware. I've been using the internet since 1991 (before the web!) and never had a virus. But I've never trusted Windows.

A terrific book to read is 'Approaching Zero' which is about the early days of hacking. People used to go 'dumpster diving' - getting old telephone engineers manuals out of skips so that they could hack into phone systems. One hacker was called 'Captain Crunch'. He discovered that a free whistle given away with Captain Crunch cereal had the exact tone that, when blown three times doen a public telephone receiver, gave you free calls! It was normally only known to engineers so they could test lines!

This was in America where local calls were free. 2600 Hz was the frequency and what you did was to dial a local number which turned the charge metering off. The hacker would blow the whistle which then told the exchange to route you to the part of the exchange which dealt with long distance calls.

For those who want to try it now don't bother - there are now filters in the exchanges to stop it.

we used to know a trick or 2 to get free calls, but again they have all been stopped by the introduction of filters in exchanges and the removal of the older telephone boxes hehehehe

Hi Bev... umm I think that may have been me 😱 I do appologise to both you

and alex, and anyone else who may have been offended....SORRY!!!

Thanks very much Bev. Just ran the link and it took about 22 minutes for a full scan and found 7 infections. I will be running it regularly in the future.

Glad the prog seems to be working for you all, but do be careful. I have noticed a number of spam websites (cloaked sites I believe they may be called) which come up with 'your computer has a virus' and starts running a scan straight away - probably malware.

Dear Bev,

Thanks, it found 153 probs

Regards Dodger
