Hi all
Well my xmas was awful, spent boxing day in hospital until Monday :(
Had DKA. They wanted to put me in Intensive care, it really scared me, has anyone else suffered with DKA before? This was my first experience of it and it was horrible. x
 
Hi Karen, sorry to hear this. Many people (especially children) are in DKA on diagnosis, and I know several who were in intensive care with their life in danger, so it's a very serious situation to be in. Do you know what caused it? Had you been unwell recently or had a run of high blood glucose levels? Hope you are better now and back home? 🙂

I can't remember if you are on injections or pump? In either case, do you have a blood ketone meter to check your ketones when you are ill or have persistent high BGs? Sorry for all the questions - would like to help!

P.S. How are you feeling these days Karen (apart from the scary DKA episode)? I seem to remember you were having some counselling after your miscarriage - I do hope you're feeling a little happier and more positive.

Thanks for your reply, they said i had an infection. But yes i did suffer from alot of high blood sugars, i recently had another miscarriage, so my diabetes has gone out of the window, i stopped taking my blood sugars and also stopped my Lantus Insulin after food, as i felt like i had to punish myself, i know it sounds really silly and very childish but 2 miscarriages and my head is in the shed. Since coming out of hospital, i have been really strict with myslef and i test every couple of hours and my insulin is back on track.
Thanks for your concern, the doctor put me on antidepresants for the miscarriage, i have to go back next week for a review to see how i am coping. xx
 
Karen, I am really sorry to hear this :( I have also been very ill since Boxing Day, just starting to feel human again. I had DKA when I was diagnosed and it was truly horrible. Do start sticking to your testing and injecting schedule and hopefully there will be no repeat of the awful experience. Take care.
 
Oh no Karen, what a really awful time you've been having, so sorry to hear you had another miscarriage. I'm glad you're getting some good support from your medical team. You're doing brilliantly getting yourself back on track with the diabetes management - it feels much better to be the one in control, instead of letting the diabetes control you. But it doesn't give you a day off, and makes no allowances for you feeling depressed or emotionally drained. Hope you've got a good support network from friends/family? 2014 will be a better year! 🙂

To second Hobie, really pleased to hear your head is getting sorted 🙂

Please never stop injecting and don't miss crucial before meal and before sleeping blood tests, although if things get really bad, as a very short term be-kind-to-yourself measure, you could omit 2 hours after eating tests and accept slightly higher blood glucose levels or have a low carb meal which means you don't have to inject any short acting insulin.

Good to hear your doctor (GP, I assume?) is looking after you and going to follow up how you get on.

Sorry to hear you had an episide of DKA Karen. I had it when I was diagnosed (like many type 1s), and then once when on holiday in Australia. It can be pretty rough but the hospital is the best place to be when it happens.

I'm sorry about your miscarriage. Please dont punish yourself, its not your fault. The thing I find with my type 1 is, if you treat it right, it will treat you right as well. Be kind to yourself and know that we're all here for you if you ever need anything x

Thanks everyone, i am thinking possitve for 2014. Diabetes will not be the boss, i am going to be the boss. After DKA, it really frightened me, my partner was also very scared, so he keeps telling me to check my blood and also checks the machine to make sure i have done it, he said he does trust me but when i had a hypo before i told him my blood was 15, when it was 1. I dont remember this, so i have always told him whenever i do my blood he is to check the machine to make sure i am ok.
It scared the both of us, so this year i am in control of things. 2014 will be my year, 2013 has gone and was a very bad year for the both of us, but we got through it together. xx

Hi Karen, so sorry you have been through all this. I hope you will go from strength to strength now and start to regain control over the D. You are doing really well from what I can see from reading your posts. Well done.
