Hey, I was wondering if anyone else has ever had DKA despite have normal blood sugars etc? I was discharged from hospital today after being admitted on friday with DKA due to an on going chest infection and im not afraid to admit that it scared me so much due to how serious it was! my body was shutting down on me etc. has this ever happened to anyone else?

Sg, sorry to hear you have been so unwell and glad to hear you are now on the mend.
I've never had DKA but have heard it can and does happen very quickly though.

It is the most awful thing to ever go through. it really is. i cant remember half of it, i was that ill! i wouldnt wish it against anyone.

I had DKA at diagnosis and agree that it is the most awful I have ever felt :( My BG was up at 38 though, I've not heard of DKA with low BG because usually the ketones come from an inability to use blood glucose coupled with an inability to process ketones properly, both of which require insulin. That doesn't mean it can;t happen though, clearly, people are very complex!

Hope you never have to go through anything similar again 🙂

graham had it 2 years ago when had an ear infection and they dont do nothing in hospital apart from makeyou drink like i would anyway , what do they do in other hospitals ?

DKA is horrible..

I can vouch that yes you can get DKA with lowish blood glucose levels, as it was why I ended up spending more time of my last pregnancy in hospital than I did at home, my BG would hit 8 kick off DKA and I would end up in hospital for about 3 week😱

Thankfully I haven't had DKA since having my daughter, but do know once is starts to kick in it can escalate very quickly indeed..

My son had DKA when he had flu a couple of years ago. I was suprised because all the time he was ill, we had managed to keep his blood sugars down. On about the third day, he started off with pains in his kidneys, I took him to hospital, and literally while we were waiting to be seen he was deteriorating. He ended up being rushed through and kept in and treated.

I've learnt something new from this thread. Rather frightening. 😱

But thanks for making it known.🙂

linking to this you make me remind me that i had ketones for 3 or 4 days when i was prgnant and i am not diabetic i was so ill that i kept vomiting all the time and the gp gave me some kind of tablets

I've had DKA too many times to remember, mostly due to infections, low BG readings but high ketones. I've also had it with high BG but it is easier to manage like that, lots more insulin 😉

Last time I had DKA with low BGs I was hooked up to several drips, IV Antibiotics, Sliding scale insulin, Potassium/Saline mix and Dextrose. The dextrose was to give the insulin something to process and stop me from hypoing, the Antibiotics were to clear the infection and the Potassium/Saline mix was to keep me hydrated and to counteract the Ketones (Potassium helps a lot, along with insulin, Bananas are good) Took over a week to get me back to "normal" whatever that is 😉

I will agree that DKA is possibly the worst experience you ca go through, initial stages being muscle cramps (easily missed) followed by severe vomiting which causes further cramps to the muscles in the abdomen, the vomiting causes further ketones to form which begin to affect other areas of your body, you become confused (much ike in a hypo) and become excessively weak, soon after this breathing becomes laboured with every breath feeling as though your chest is being compressed tightly at some point you stop breathing due to the muscled being overly strained. A short while after this you begin blacking out due to lack of oxygen to the brain, first for a few moments, but each time getting longer until you go into a coma, this is then (more often than not) followed by death.

I've been to the blacking out stage, which occurs around an hour before death in extreme cases. I've gone that far twice, both with super high BG readings but also both with severe bacterial infections, took a week each time to get me better.

Not gone DKA now for nearly 5 years so...

I think I had DKA when I was a kiddie, but don't really remember that. I also had it when I was 18....twice in 2 weeks. I woke up in the middle of the night with an excrutiating pain in my kidneys that all I could do was scream :(

admitted to hospital when I couldn't stop being sick...given an anti-sickness injection in my bum and ran out the door to be sick! 😱

was in hospital for a week, let out in time for the weekend and was back in again on the Monday for another week. Was put on insulin drip, anti-biotics and saline/potassium. And because I was 18, was put on adult ward....and the next youngest person was about 75 :( that was horrible.

Mine was down to high levels though, not low.

not gonna lie, this has scared me actual witless. i was pretty bad, i had such bad abdominal pain, my chest was getting tight, but i never knew you could get DKA with low blood sugars. id been to the doctors so many times about my chest and all they did was give me various anti biotics which clearly never worked. it just made me depressed thinking about. what a week! ha.

Millie went into DKA about 5 months post dx due to vomiting bug, all happened within 6 hr of first vomit, just could not keep a thing down, she went on IV fluids, glucose and an insulin drive. Lots of tests on her blood gases which was awful for her :( Right as rain and discharged after 24 hrs. Scared me to death how quickly it happened and how vunerable she was but remarkable how quick the turn-around was!

how are you feeling now??

Yes I had DKA with a chest infection and normal blood sugars a few years ago. I'd fallen asleep and missed my jab and meal but thought all was well as my levels were ok. I ended up in hospital. Always check for ketones if you are unwell in any way as you can never be too careful.

The story was quite graphic eh..................I know I must have been close to DKA once before but I have never been in hospital though................my initial response to high BG is inject, even back on 2 a day injections.......

Thanks god for the sick day rules.........🙂
