Relationship to Diabetes
Parent of person with diabetes
Hi everyone - i posted on here about 10 days ago after my daughter was admitted to hospital with DKA and later again i posted because she was still presenting with worrying symptoms after her discharge home - dizzy spells, exhaustion, no appetite etc...also her bloods were rising and falling a lot in a short space of time.
In the 10 years she has been diabetic she has never come close to DKA but has started to 'binge' drink at weekends and it was getting out of control.
Anyway, on Monday this week it all started again. she was violently ill (she has not had alcohol since her previous admission) so knew it was not alcohol related. The vomitting was really awful and after a few hours i got her to a and e. she did not have DKA or any diabetic symptoms really but her heart rate was very fast and her lung carbon dioxide was very low - she was also dehydrated. she was given fluid and anti-sickness and kept in mainly becausde her body was working very hard to stave off DKA. i asked avout addisons disease after reading up about it and yesterday she had a short synaptic test - we were told we would receive the results yesterday but not - neither have they been available today - i have no faith in the hospital and now feel daughter is going into decline again - loss of appetite. if she has addisons surely the delay in getting her the right treatment is placing her at risk? can anyone advise me on how to push this - does the test take days to come back?

thank you so much in advance

Hi Pookey,
Sorry to hear your daughter isn't well again.
From what I remember yes the test does take a while to come back.
But and it's a big but they could and should have done a cortisol test then and there as well.
If her blood sugars were normal or higher than normal as in not hypo, and BP was ok then I suspect you can rule out Addison's.

An addison's crisis would involve very low bs and bp.
What ever the problem is I hope she soon feels well again.

Hi pookey.

I have no idea what, but is there any chance she could have taken anything other than alcohol ?

Hi

As far as i am aware she has not taken anything else....she hasn't left the house and i think she would have admitted it - seeing as she was so poorly...
Her blood pressure was low - has been for some time but blood sugars were ok, bit high really, so would that rule out addisons? she has vitiligo - if thats the correct spelling!! any ideas of what it could be?

I would personally get her to your GP or A&E if you feel it is more urgent.

I've just googled vitiligo and it suggests it may be autoimmune related, same as T1 diabetes. So that woud fit, but I wouldn't have thought it would cause any secondary symptoms such as low BP.

Did the doctors suggest any sort of follow up for her ?

Hi,
what do you call low? Vitilgo is autoimmune as well. Addison's depending on what stage it's at and the cause you go brown or have brown patches on skin creases.

she's still in the hospital- they wont let her out until the tests come back due to 2 emergency admissions i n 2 weeks. they worried because her body was working too hard on Monday to fend off dka - heart and lungs - shes had xrays tests etc and all seem to be clear. doc thinks her adrenal glands are causing a problem but it sounds like addisons may not be the case...? whats left? thyroid?

Hi Pookey,
sorry to hear your daughter is still in hospital, it sounds as if that's the best place for her.
In all honesty there is no way any of us can say what the problem is or isn't.
The Addison's I can only go on my own experience. Someone elses would be different.

Do rest assured though if it is an adrenal problem then she is in the best place for emergency first aid as all the right drugs are there on hand as well as the staff who will have been well primed.
