Hi folks I have been talking to my Aunty this morning about food and my diabetes, she happened to mention that she has diverticulosis and so does a poo in little drops,I said I'm sure that I had seen diverticulosis mentioned a few times on the Diabetes forum, would it be of any help for her to take something like psyllium husks,I have also seen milled linseeds mentioned on the net,has any got any thoughts on that?
Hi I have sent her an empty packet of milled flaxseeds from Aldi so she can see what to look for,I have asked her to speak to her doctor just to check though, thanks
Yes - I was diagnosed with Diverticular Disease (umbrella name for Diverticulosis, Diverticulitis and Diverticula) 20 years ago and immediately prescribed Psyllium husk, which I have taken daily faithfully ever since. With DD in all its forms, it is very important to keep to colon emptied regularly without straining and that's what Psyllium does - it bulks and softens the stools and makes them easier to pass, rather than the rats droppings you poor Aunt is experiencing. I was actually prescribed Fybogel, an orange flavoured powdered form which is mixed with 250ml water and chugged down before it thickens into a gell. It does make you looser and go more frequently, and takes about 2 weeks to start to take full effect, so it's not an emetic. Since being diagnosed with Diabetes though, I've switched to Inulin, which is chicory root, as if doesn't contain the carbs and sweeteners of Fybogel.
Please reassure her that 50% of people over 50 have diverticulosis, rising to 75% of people over 80. It's known as the Western Society disease. If she has no other symptoms, taking psyllium and following a soluble fibre healthy eating plan should keep her fine.

I learned all about it on patient.info/forums when I was having problems. I've tried to upload my fact sheet for your aunt but it's not in an allowed format. I'll try to get a copy to you in your private message so perhaps you can print it for your aunt.
It's too big for private messaging. Perhaps you can go into the Diverticula Forum yourself and look for the article by Dr Colin Tidy, then print for your aunt. It's written in simple English with a diagram for non medical people. Frustrating!
hi @belugalad - I dont have any personal experience of Diverticulitis other than my late mother suffered with it for a period of time, The only thing I can remember her mentioning was pips! She wouldnt eat them as she said they got caught in the little folds in her intestines. Thinks like tomato pips she was referring to. She was a bit of a fruit bat too, to help keep herself regular (and diabetic i should add, but she kept fruits down to 2 pcs a day). Hope your aunt finds some good info, maybe a chat with her Dr? if she uncomfortable.

Hi thanks @Tee G she's fine thanks,it only came into conversation last week on the phone,I was speaking to her about low carb eating and that how I had been constipated a while ago,it was then that she mentioned that she only passes little slim bits of faeces as she has diverticulitis and I thought to myself perhaps Psyllium husk might help as she would hopefully then pass a good sized stool and get things cleared quicker.
I'm going to send her some information next week
