I confess my immediate thought was "surely it should be no more than half your height
In actual fact both BMI and waist measurement are being downgraded as indicators due to peoples individuality.
Basically people carry their weight differently, some more on the tummy, others legs and bum etc etc.
Waist measurement is a quick check tool, so it is still useful.

Try googling weight adjusted waist index - I posted recently about it here - http://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/weight-adjusted-waist-index-wwi.113275/
It's a way of evaluating healthy weight taking into account that we all have different builds and fat distributions.

Hi! Take no notice of that nurse. She's probably not diabetic herself and has no idea. I've struggled with similar. I went to a gym three times a week for nearly a year, and didn't lose a single ounce. All I got was the damage in my knees was exacerbated, and I was exhausted. I've been on the large size all my life and I'm 63 now, so I don't think I'm going to shift any weight really. sigh The one thing I've learned is that I'm not alone in this. Good luck!

Interesting reads, as are the posts on this forum, but I am also on the large size. I use to run a lot, did several half marathons in my forties but even with all the training I only lost inches and not weight. Now in my seventies and dealing with this malarkey I have lost some weight, not enough for the nurse, but lost inches. The medical ' professionals ' just don't seem to get it. A LOSS is still that......be it weight or. Inches. Don't be downhearted

Hi, I’ve just joined as I’m so disappointed by my hbA1C result that I got today. 3months ago I found out it was a bit high 44/45, so immediately cut out all bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, sweets and upped my exercise to walking 5+ miles a day and doing long continuous swims 3-4 times /week. I only drink water or tea. Home baking was a big hobby, but is now a thing of the past. I’ve lost enough weight to be in the healthy range now.
Today I found out my test result , after 3months of this regime , is only down to 43 and I am so deflated.
I know that I much fitter on this diet etc , so I’ll stick with it, but I wonder if maybe my blood sugar has been high for a long time without me knowing and maybe I’m just too old ( 65) to get it to budge much. I’d really be glad of any encouragement. I did phone the helpline and they were very helpful, but it is good to hear of others’ experience,
I know the feeling Bellago. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic at 42 hba1c. Did what you did in cutting out all the high glycaemic carbs and sweet stuff and, three months later, it was 43. It did come down to 40 after about 3 years and stayed down until this year where it has crept up again which is disappointing. Diabetic Nurse and GPs not too concerned as they think it will come down again but having to be more careful again now. One of our GPs who is a specialist in diabetes thinks I have increased insulin resistance with age (I am 71 now) so I will have to watch my diet for good now I think.

Another point I have thought of. Three months is not that long. It will probably come down further over time.

Thanks to everyone for your support. It’s good to hear that there’s still hope things can improve if I keep going. I’ve lost a little more weight this week and my waist size is less than a week ago, so that’s all good. It makes such a difference to hear the experiences of other people.

Personally I thought that 48 was diabetes?? Correct me if I am wrong

You are correct.

42-47 is non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (The official term for 'pre-diabetes')
48+ is diabetic.
