Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been carefully adhering to the government advice and staying at home. I control my diabetes with diet and exercise and am aware that my blood glucose has not been quite as good as it should be because I can only exercise once a day for an hour. This is with my dogs and as anyone with a male dog knows weemails must be read by him. Today I met a doctor and his wife whom I know and he said that the exercise once a day is for guidance only and that provided I stay 2 metres from other people I could go out for more exercise. There are lots of open spaces where I could go. What do others think? An extra period of brisk walking would be so good.

Go for it I say. Manage the risk by greeting others with a cheery hello from a distance!

PS.... keep your dog on a lead and under control and pick up. Not every body appreciates their presence. Mrs B for example is unsteady on her feet and is easily spooked. A "he only wants to play" explanation just does not cut it.

Definitely go for it especially if its what you use to control your bs, going out for exercise is down to common sense and as you said you have a few open spaces you should be fine.

Thanks for your response Docb. Both my dogs are always on a lead and I always pick up. I feel very strongly about irresponsible owners who do not. I think we also need to appreciate that not everyone likes dogs. One of mine likes to join joggers which is why I do not let him off. We have lots of ball games in our garden so they get their fun. 🙂

Thank you for your response brisr949. I am feeling encouraged to do that. 🙂

Did not doubt that you would be amongst the vast majority of dog owners who are responsible. Like most things, its the few irresponsible ones that give the activity a bad name. Enjoy your walks!

Go for it, I'd say.

I’m taking our dog out twice a day , although I’m type 1 a walk with the dog means less insulin to me . I’d say go for it . I’ve been working from home for 7 weeks and those two walks help me mentally .

Thank you everyone for your replies. I feel so happy that I can go out a bit more. We will get beyond this but I fear it will take a while. Hope you all stay safe and well.

Exercise is a medical need so you can go out more than once a day 🙂 I do and people can say what they like. 🙂

As far as I understand it the idea that people should only exercise once a day is just guidance, and the law doesn't restrict us to once a day. So (as with a lot of these things) use common sense to reduce the chances of mixing with people, and if it seems safe (and otherwise sensible) to go out a couple of times a day then go ahead.

Wales is the only one of the home nations whose regulations specify 'no more than once a day' for exercise, I think, and even that is tempered with 'unless for medical reasons'
