Digital Kitchen Scales

Kaylz, I have had my salter scales for ages, I have used digital scales for a long time as the accuracy is better for baking. Before them I had the scales with weights, I had a set of imperial and metric weights, as I never trusted the scales with a dial.

If you like weighing your food keep doing it if it helps with your control. In a sense I weigh my food most days as I rarely cook without a recipe, so weigh and measure according to that.

I haven't been on a carb counting course and after my eating disorder and everything I ament confident enough to eye ball and guesstimate the carbs and risk either taking too much or not enough insulin, if people don't like it then that's fine but I'm not the only insulin dependant that still weighs their "normal food" to know how much insulin to take, thanks for the encouragement I appreciate it as was left feeling a little flat :( xx

Unless I am out or the food comes in a portion size ,ie a slice of bread I weigh my food too , I do this at the preparation stage. I cook for the two of us and am pretty good at eyeballing my half but I am still not too good at eyeballing the carb content of a meal.

I weight my 45g of Low Sugar Granola every morning but just dollop the yoghurt in because if I get too much or too little granola it can make a significant difference to the carb content whereas I would have to seriously misjudge the yoghurt for it to make much difference to the carb count and consequent insulin requirement.

precisely, I eat oats so that could make a huge difference, also potatoes looks can be deceiving, I do measure my almond milk but that's not for facts of carbs as it doesn't have any but it's the perfect consistency for me personally, I am tempted to just mark it with permanent marker on my pot though lol
xx

I weigh all my food too, I have Salters scales, and work bought me a set for when I'm there.

I think I'm going to get the Salter Arc ones as there is an option to get them in green! :D 15 year guarantee if I remember to register them as well so cant grumble xx

I've a digital scale bought from Lidl a few years ago, it's nice and compact, didn't cost much at all and is accurate as I've tested it against an expensive talking scale we got from the RNIB.
I find weighing is most useful with potatoes in their various forms as I need a pretty good idea of carbs in order to decide on insulin dose.

I did have a look in Lidl but they don't have any in at the moment :( precisely I need it for basing my insulin doses too! I may be completely wrong here but are you in Scotland? xx

Yes, same county or the next one I think.

your last name the manufacturer of a well known bread? Haha, I thought it was you I'd commented on posts about the Libre and stuff on Facebook! xx

10/10 !! 😛
woo hoo, I knew it! :D

how you getting on with your Libre? I've an appointment with my consultant on the 21st at Stracathro for review (bloods getting done on Monday) but this sensors running at least 30% low now so that's going to take some explaining that I've not been permanently hypo! lol

The Libre is just a brilliant bit of kit and I'm learning such a lot about my glucose by using it. I see a consultant at the end of next month for an annual review, but from my Libre data my A1C is much improved on my last result. Going in a short 3 hour carb counting course next week - should be revison, but might pick up some useful tips. There are full day courses and I think I'll try to get on one later.

that’s always been my approach for rice, pasta, cereals etc, though I confess there is a degree of ‘ish’ slack for the odd tablespoon of flour in a sauce, root veggies etc. And I still eyeball spuds based on the old adage of ‘hen’s egg is 10g’ for a raw potato (but fewer carbs in new potatoes)

Yes, I like them. But I left them at home in Canada. And I had to buy some cheaper options quickly. I even liked the new kitchen scale I bought on Amazon. I chose quickly, almost did not think about buying. I just needed a scale to work with. But the model is not bad. You can see them for yourself here https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Beautiful-Measurement-Stainless-Batteries/dp/B08SW6F5SZ. I think it's the best thing I've ever had besides Salter Arc. And they even manage with small ingredients, which is very important.

Does anyone use scales with carbohydrates / nutritional info on or are they a waste of time?

@Kaylz - I've been on a carb counting course in 2013 but
no way am I confident enough to eye ball and guesstimate carbs - recently I weigh a lot of my food. Maybe I'll take a pair of scales with me in my handbag when I'm eating out lol.

@everydayupsanddowns - I like this what a good idea "And I still eyeball spuds based on the old adage of ‘hen’s egg is 10g’ for a raw potato (but fewer carbs in new potatoes)" - what about cooked 'normal' potatoes that haven't been mashed and also cooked new potatoes?

Apparently I have the Salter Arc scales. Had them a long while, if they have not expired the 15 year guarantee it must be close. Earlier this year I thought they had died as the display was stuck on "----" and changing the batteries did not help. But then they just started working again, so I guess that counts as a recommendation.
