Had my appmnt with my Doc earlier. She was not too impressed with the DSN informing all of the newly diagnosed T2s that we will all go on insulin eventually. My Doc said there are many cases of elderly people having been daignosed for several years and are still not on insulin. Doc advised me to just concentrate on weight loss and exercise. I will have my BG done next month. She also was against the BG Meter - she said the daily testing would not be beneficial to me. Just the HBA1c tests will be suffice. In an nutsell if I watch my diet, lose weight and exercise ( eat the right foods), I can delay the insulin by several years.......She made it sound more positive than the DSN

Glad you had a positive appointment 🙂

Tricky to know what the 'right foods' are though, if you are not allowed to see how different ones affect you. Without strips you'll just have to rely on general advice and hope it works for your system. In which case you'll need to be very careful of all carbs (so-called starchy/healthy or otherwise) and only have them in moderation. Bread, cereals, rice, fruit, potatoes, pasta etc etc will all raise your BG levels - sadly it's not just sugar you need to worry about. Without testing you can't know how high or how fast, and which ones you can 'get away with' :(

I am newly diagnosed; my GP gave me a handout on T2 diabetes and that was it; I went home and didn't know what to do. I was in a trance like state for weeks; it wasn't until I came to this site I saw there was light at the end of a very long tunnel. My first appointment with the DSN was good; she also has Type 2 diabetes but like your GP advised me against testing. But I never listen so bought myself a tester and have found out that All Bran; Porridge; Baked potatoe; Baked Beans and Yoghurt spike my sugars. Not too good on Granola either. It is important to test even if you don't do it every 5 mins.
My DSN advised that if I was to go on any websites just look on Diabetes.UK.

Good advice

Weight loss and physical exericse will help - good luck. Amanda x🙂

I agree with the testing, being newly diagnosed too. How are we to know what is causing the BG to rise if we dont test. My GP said everyone spikes, but it is the rate and level and subsequent fall that we need to know, just from a mathematical view.

The HbA1c result is an average I understand of the last 3 months, but averages are just that. It could be level most of the time, or high spikes with low troughs.

As a result I made a conscious decision to buy my own strips, at least until I can reasonably predict what I can and cant eat, then I will ease off and test once or twice a week.

OK, got that off my chest, feel better now. :D

Thats nice, 🙂 my family dont even agree with me most of the time:D
