Can anyone help me sort out what to do about diet.I have type 2 and get confused what I can eat and what I can't,as I am not a good cook it would be nice to know some simple things to start with

Hi, there will many more knowledgable folk than I on here but my diet mainly consists of :
Nuts, berries, protein bars and shakes (watch the sugar in those ), eggs meats. Cheeses , peanut butter , salad, vegetables, coleslaw, very small portions of potatoes, dark chocolate, plain Greek yogurt, salmon, tuna, mayonnaise and wine 🙂
I have to massively avoid :
Pasta, pizza, chips, biscuits, cakes, chocolate, bread and crisps.
Hope this helps a little. Remember what spikes one will no spike another so testing a lot after each food type and keeping a note really helps. I also have a soup maker and an omelette maker these help me a lot. Good luck. Soon it will be second nature xx

Welcome @RICHARD6259 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Do you know what your HbA1C was at diagnosis?

Simple breakfasts are things like Greek yoghurt with fresh berries or poached eggs. Salads or soups are good for lunch, and pretty simple. Salad can encompass much more than lettuce and tomato so don’t think you have to have boring foods. You could have an omelette with it or cold meat or fish.

For your evening meal, a simple start is to reduce the carbs (potatoes, pasta, rice, etc) and increase the green veg.

Welcome to the forum @RICHARD6259 . I am glad that you have found us.

The main focus when changing your diet to manage Diabetes is to focus on carbohydrates. Don’t worry I knew nothing about these before I was diagnosed, but you soon become an expert. Whilst the papers and TV focus on ‘sugar’ that is only part of the source of glucose. All carbohydrates become glucose once they are inside us, some just convert more quickly especially simple sugars, like sugar, cakes and sweets. Other big sources of carbs are things like rice, pasta, potatoes and bread. It doesn’t mean that you can’t eat these but you might need to eat less, so have smaller portions.

By making small changes to the foods you choose, and/or portions sizes you can reduce the amount of carbs you eat and so bring down your glucose levels.

Welcome to the forum @RICHARD6259

You might find some ideas and pointers in the downloadable ‘Enjoy Food’ book.

Though some forum members seem to find that they need to be rather more careful with carb content than some of the recipes.

Diabetes is a very individual condition - and a number of different approaches can work well for different people, so the important thing is to find your own tolerances. There are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

It’s not that you need to avoid these things entirely, but you need to work out the portion sizes, and the types of carbs that you tolerate well as part of a varied and sustainable eating plan.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

If you’d like to see the sorts of different things folks on the forum enjoy, you could also check out the lengthy ‘what did you eat yesterday’ thread
