My experience of pubs ( fairly high) is that if you ask for diet drinks that is what you get, 95% of the time. You can see if there are diet bottles behind the bar before you order, but I believe most places nowadays have a good selection of drinks on the pump and if they serve you what you have asked for it will usually be the diet version that you get. (Those pumps have syrup bases which are diluted with water at the pump stage, so each pump handle has buttons to press to indicate which base syrup you want dispensed. Only error should be if they pressed the wrong button)
I believe if they do not have what you have asked for they are required to tell you that and tell you what they have “ sorry we don’t do Coke, we have Pepsi”, or “I’m sorry we don’t have diet we only have...” etc
The one I would now watch out against is the new Fevertree mixers which come with a “low sugar” label but still all have the fruit sugar in and so are not as carb free as Slimline. But until we make that clear to bar staff they are unlikely to understand the essential difference. So I always do. Everybody’s favourite customer, that’s me!!!!
And I can always tell at first sip if I have been given the sickly sweet full fat version, no need for test strips for me!
The cafe where i work occasionally sells Pepsi cans and I always ask if they want full fat or diet versions and I still get a few odd looks occasionally!
