Diet controlled type 2 told today and lost

Hi all I got a phone call today from gp to tell me I'm now a type 2 diabetic and that was it I'm in shock and feeling lost any help would be so appreciated
 
Hello @Cherry1 and welcome - sorry to hear you're feeling so shocked and lost. Please try not to worry, type 2 is manageable, though you're likely to have to make some changes to your diet.

And please do ask any questions you have, there are lots of people here who can give you advice and support.

Do your GP tell you what your result was? It helps to have the number if you can get it, just so people know how best to advise you.

Thankyou so much for answering me my result was 53 I think it's my hsb1c or something like that I did say I'm new lol. I have a lot of weight to lose but I have already started that and have joined the gym recently . I know I'm high risk as my real father has lost limbs through diabetes along with 3 of his siblings

Hi & welcome!

That would be "HbA1c". It's used to estimate what your average blood glucose has been over the last 2-3 months. I found this pic very helpful when I was starting out:

HbA1c is the top line of blue numbers. You can see your 53 isn't too bad, in the green-ish zone. In the US, for example, it would qualify you as just barely diabetic. In the UK the cut-off is 48 but even on that basis you're not looking too bad.

Probably losing a bit of weight and reducing some carbs a bit will be enough to get you below the 48 level, and there's every possibility of getting things down further, below the 42 mark which is where the notional "pre-diabetes" category starts.

There's plenty of people around here who started at higher levels than yours and with a bit of focus got things down into the 40's and 30's within a few months. Eg: I started at 89 and was down into the mid 30's after ~8 months, via losing some weight and eating better. Others have done it faster. So no apparent reason why you shouldn't be able to do the same kind of thing. Chances are you'll end up healthier and feeling better than you have for a long time!

Also, your added risk of diabetes-related complications at an HbA1c of 53 is tiny. So no need to panic; no need to get things sorted immediately; take your time to research and ask questions; look to make sustainable changes over time.

Yep as @Eddy Edson says, 53 HbA1c is not too bad just over the 48 which tips you slightly into diabetes range but should be easily managed, firstly limit the sugars in your diet ,cut out the cakes biscuits sweet drinks etc and also limit the starches in your diet, that’s grain products, rice wheat etc, potato, root vegetables so that’s bread, pasta, pastry, cereals etc whereas proteins and healthy fats are ok...

Agree wholeheartedly with the posts above and would add that you will be put on a register which will give you annual checks for blood glucose, eyes, feet and general health. Take advantage of these together with a bit of a change in lifestyle and you can forget about the problems that previous generations had with the complications that can come with uncontrolled diabetes ever happening to you.
 
Hi. I've just had my Type 2 training course yesterday, which was very helpful and echoes everything others have said. You should be referred to one if you are in the UK, so ask your Practise Nurse. I was advised to look on my result as an early warning to live a better lifestyle and avoid the sorts of complications your family members had. So with healthy eating and exercise you should see a reduction with your next blood test.

Be prepared for advice such as eating baked potato and baked beans for lunch - they are not deliberately dangerous - they just had training which ignores all experience and logic.
Some areas are better than others, some individuals have taken on board the low carb approach. Bit of a lottery really.

Yes, I suspect the training was based on type 1s on fixed doses of mixed insulin, who (before the advent of modern insulins) had to eat carbs or die - and is now being applied to type 2s not on insulin, who would do better to cut their carbs down as much as possible/sustainable ... 🙄
