I am an insomniac and often hungry at night. I used to binge on biscuits, cereal, cheese, tinned rice, anything to satisfy my hunger. That probably caused my blood sugar problem. What can I substitute? I have resorted to a fried egg. I don't have a weight problem, very low BMI. . Any suggestions?

Cheese, meat, nuts, jelly / berries and cream, yoghurt, a bigger dinner so you’re less hungry later on

Having more healthy fats ad protein as part of your meal may help. Having a drink is another thing to try rather than food.

Although I don't snack, I sometimes eat my first meal of the day fairly late and have a small meal later. Long ago now, I used to have cheese with crackers, but now have it with cucumber or a tomato.
Other small meals would be a small tin of tuna with coleslaw, scrambled eggs with grated cheese, or leftovers from the day before or something stored away in the freezer from days or even weeks before - sometimes it is a surprise.

Hi @Quizzy I too am an insomniac so understand the problems you have and how it can throw you system out of order.
I used to snack on ice cream, milk shakes and have the odd sandwich all of which probably led to my T2 diagnosis.

To be honest, I have had to resort to pure will power.

If I'm up at 3am, it feels like it should be breakfast at 5 am and then lunch at 10 am and so on.

I find that doing some house work helps pass the time, only dusting and polishing as any hoovering would wake Mrs Alan who would not be best pleased.

If you really do feel the need to have something to eat which I can understand, nuts are always a good option, but I find cheese reduces the hunger pangs as does dark chocolate (80 %).

There are also forums for insomniacs which may be of some help.

Take care and sleep well

Alan 😉

Thanks to everyone. I am trying to eat later in the evening, sometimes that seems to work. Cheese is my fall back but recently I have not been able to find my preferred crumbly cheeses Cheshire and Caerphilly: the supermarket shelves are filled with innumerable varieties of Cheddar.
Never thought of looking for an insomniacs forum!
I am very grateful for your help.

There is a good selection of cheeses in Aldi, if you like blue cheese then their Stratford Blue is really nice. Morrisons also seem to have a good variety.
