Did your mother tell you

Both my parents said the latter but of course, by the time us children got wed, inflation was raging at breakneck speed so by the time you could have saved up for whatever - it had doubled in price! Hence, I had to disobey that one.
I remember back in the late 80's being encouraged to borrow by my personal bank manager. "It's what we all do these days, increase your loan, consolidate your cards", nice friendly man who I don't think was really on my side. Still it did pay off in the end when I got the refund due to mis-selling.

My mum never really said any of these classics (apart from the old "be nice to your brother or I'll bang your heads together"!) but one piece of advice which has been surprisingly useful was: "If people don't move, make them move" - said when trying to navigate through a crowded supermarket with a trolley, but applies well to other areas of life too!

I have just remembered another from my Mum:

"Have you considered what the neighbours will think?"

I think my response was usually along the lines of "They can mind their own business." :D

Although I still think the same way, in hindsight, my Mum was just from another era where what others think was important. People knew more about what their neighbours were doing (at least in some ways) and could make your life difficult.
