Well, on this day exactly 9 years ago I was wandering around the house in a mental fuzz, short, shallow breaths, blurry vision and ringing in my ears. My heart was pounding away like fury and I felt very weak and sick. It was a Bank Holiday Monday, so GP not available and I was too unfamiliar with the NHS to know the alternatives. I thought I would ring NHS Direct, but as I brought the phone to my ear I decided I really needed help, so dialled 999 😱
The fast-response vehicle was with me within 5 minutes and the ambulance arrived just a couple of minutes later and they blue-lighted me to Southampton General. Blood sugar was 37 mmol/l and HbA1c 11.8% (105 mmol/mol) and I was diagnosed with diabetes.I then spent 8 days in hospital, but it wasn't until I got home and had to do my first injection that it really hit me, that this would be with me for life (or 10 years, depending on who you believe 😉)
Can't believe 9 years have passed! 😱 I've been very fortunate over the years to have maintained good control, helped enormously along the way by all the wonderful people here for practically the whole journey - thank you! 🙂
I've started Year 10 well - started a new Libre sensor last night, and levels were very steady overnight - hopefully it will help me enjoy a cake-fest as the day progresses! 😱
