Well, on this day exactly 9 years ago I was wandering around the house in a mental fuzz, short, shallow breaths, blurry vision and ringing in my ears. My heart was pounding away like fury and I felt very weak and sick. It was a Bank Holiday Monday, so GP not available and I was too unfamiliar with the NHS to know the alternatives. I thought I would ring NHS Direct, but as I brought the phone to my ear I decided I really needed help, so dialled 999 😱

The fast-response vehicle was with me within 5 minutes and the ambulance arrived just a couple of minutes later and they blue-lighted me to Southampton General. Blood sugar was 37 mmol/l and HbA1c 11.8% (105 mmol/mol) and I was diagnosed with diabetes.I then spent 8 days in hospital, but it wasn't until I got home and had to do my first injection that it really hit me, that this would be with me for life (or 10 years, depending on who you believe 😉)

Can't believe 9 years have passed! 😱 I've been very fortunate over the years to have maintained good control, helped enormously along the way by all the wonderful people here for practically the whole journey - thank you! 🙂

I've started Year 10 well - started a new Libre sensor last night, and levels were very steady overnight - hopefully it will help me enjoy a cake-fest as the day progresses! 😱 :D

Happy diaversary Northie. 365 days to go and you and the rest of us will be cured 🙂🙄

Many happy returns of the day. What a lovely day it is today, hope you have a good one. I always remember our matching Hba1cs on diagnosis - SNAP. ☺️

Ooo, happy 9th dire-versary, Northerner.😛 My no. 9's coming up in July. I wasn't as ill as you at dx and I don't have super-tight control like you (so the similarities stop at the no. 9:confused:🙂) but you and the forum have helped me enORmously. Enjoy your virtual curd tart...:D

Happy diaversary, Northie. I won't add, and many happy returns, that elusive cure will arrive one day!

Happy diaversary Northerner. Hope you enjoy cake and the day. Thanks for all you do for everyone on the forum, it is much appreciated. Curlygirl

Yes - it's a shame your doctors didn't draw the same conclusions as the ones who diagnosed me though, and got you straight on the right treatment!

Massive congratulations and you deserve that delicious cake! I appreciate how you well you manage your diabetes, and always ready to help us all with our questions and dramas. Thanks.

Happy diaversary Northie. Fish chips and peas is the way to go. :D I'd have the trifle too. My fave meal!

Is it true they only gave you ten years back then? :(

I am deeply touched by your moving story Alan but so sorry to learn you entered into the world of Diabetes in such way that you did. I can only surmise that day 9years ago must have been both frightening & devastating for you.

Fast forward 9years - and here you are celebrating your 9th diaversary. I believe it is only your relentless determination & will power to control your Diabetes that has got you this far into your Diabetes journey of which you must be very proud. You truly are an amazing example to all of us here on the forum .

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the advice - help and continued support that you have kindly shown to myself and all the other forum members - it really is very much appreciated.

☆☆☆ CONGRATULATIONS & HAPPY 9th DIAVERSARY Alan ☆☆☆

I can highly recommend a chocolate eclair or two on your special day!! :D

Actually, I was quite relieved to know what it was as I was thinking all sorts of things 😱 I knew next to nothing about diabetes, but I did know that it was treatable so I suddenly felt like I had a future again 🙂 Also, once they gave me insulin - as anyone who has been in that situation will tell you - I felt absolutely amazing! The contrast with how I had been feeling was quite astonishing. I've been fortunate in many ways, with a couple of close shaves along the way, but thankfully managing well 🙂

I can imagine what went through your mind at the time - our minds work overtime when we are stressed or ill - everything but...crosses it & we think the worst. Good to know you had the presence of mind to dial 999. Thankfully the paramedics & your hospital medical team acted fast and saved your life - so so glad they did:D You take care now and look after yourself x ((((hugs))))
