Hi
I was given Metformin and its caused me Diarrhoea to the point where I could not go out of house. My GP has changed it to Meltfomin prolonged release tablets Will I always have the diarrhoea or will it stop

For some the slow release doesn't cause an upset tummy for others they cant tolerate that version either, everyone's reaction to the same medication is different so unfortunately nobody here can answer that question for you and its just a case of wait and see what the outcome will be xx

I agree with Kaylz too.
If you have been on the slow release one for a while and the runs are still bad then if I were you I would stop taking it, it’s fine to stop Metfartin straight away, I would then get on to your nurse doc ASAP as their are plenty of other meds to choose from. , in the mean time if you haven’t already done so , try reducing your carbohydrate intake esp the starchy ones. I hope you soon stop keeping the loo roll manufacturers in profit .

I agree that you should stop the Metformin if the SR version still results in the runs after a week or two. Metformin is a good safe drug but only helps bit so is not vital if it gives you problems. There is nothing that acts in quite the same way as Metformin but there are other drugs to try. Yes, the low-carb diet is always the first line of defence.

I was in a dreadful state just before Christmas 2016 - I just stopped taking the tablets.
By the time I was coming round a bit I had a glucose meter and had realised that I didn't need to take anything - but the thought of having to take tablets really kept me on track.

Hi

Are you taking the metformin with a substantial amount of food and swallowing it mid meal. If not try that and see if you manage it any better. The diarrhoea should settle down after a few days to a week after stopping taking them, but sometimes it will settle down after a few weeks of continuing to take them, particularly if you make sure to take them with plenty of food.
I see that your diagnostic HbA1c was very high at 98 so you should not stop taking them without discussing it with your Health Care Professionals. The people who have stopped taking them here on the forum have mostly followed a very low carb diet which is usually very effective but you need to be quite strict with that and know which foods to avoid and find alternatives to bread and pasta and potatoes and rice etc as well as cutting out the obvious cakes and biscuits and sweets and of course sugar. It can be quite difficult to grasp when you have been used to filling your plate with starchy carbs at every meal all of your life but it can be quite an enjoyable way to eat, especially if you increase your fat intake.

Good suggestions so far. Hope your reaction to the meds settles down, or you find a way to take them that suits your body.
