Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Cant believe how many people were diagnosed around Christmas time! I was diagnosed 3 days before christmas in 2006 and gave myself my first injection on Christmas day :(

almost everyone I've spoken to who has been diagnosed type 1, myself included, seems to have been diagnosed while on holiday, I've always wondered if there us some reason behind this...

dont even say its because you ate too many sweets or bad foods!! i hate people who think thats how i "caught" diabetes 😡😡 its just a coinidence. i was diagnosied in september - no where near a holiday for me!

I dont think that at all . I know i didnt cause my diabetes i was just suprised how many people had said they were diagnosed at xmas time

A neighbour of ours was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes soon after 5 Nov when he was about 11 years old - he'd just moved to our road, so we took all the children in his family to the firework display in the park. He kept drinking fizzy drinks, but we put it down to a long travelling day.

I seem to remember some research that showed that more Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed through the winter than summer, with the theory that winter infections, eg coughs & colds, played a role.

it was explained to me once that when people without diabetes have viruses/illness/stress that their insulin requirements go up, which is fine because they have a working pancreas which just compensates and produces the extra thats needed. If you are someone who is yet to be diagnosed with diabetes for a period of time your beta cells will have been dying off and you might only be operating at say 30% capacity, but enough to keep you from being severly symptomatic or getting DKA. When you then get ill your insulin need goes up and you can no longer manage as the need and actual amount produced gets alot bigger. so people can often get diagnosed shortly after an illness.

I was diagnosed in summer - the middle of july.
However I did have a virus about 2-3 weeks before I was diagnosed.
Also I have a friend who was diagnosed around the same time and she too had a virus just before being diagnosed.

My son was diagnosed in November 1997 almost 10 years to the day. I blame it on Chickenpox with he had 6 months previous to his diagnosis.
