Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there, just thought I'd let you know how I got on at my appointment with the nurse today. As soon as I was in her office she asked me how I came to be there. I explained to her I thought I was anaemic and this was why the blood tests were done. She told me my first blood test had a 7.9 reading and my 2nd blood test which led to last weeks diagnosis was 8.4. She confirmed to me that I have Type 2 diabetes and proceeded to explain to me what diabetes is. She also told me I have Folic Acid deficiency so the next time I go back they are going to check my folic acid levels and do a check on B12 too. She is very knowledgable about diabetes and made me feel at ease talking with her. She explained how diabetes also affects your eyes. What I thought was irritated eyes because I wear make up all day long turns out to be how my diabetes is affecting my eyes. She was happy with how I have changed my diet since before my diagnosis and told me to carry on with what I am doing but also felt that I could be doing with a little help from medication, Metformin. We discussed lots of stuff and I have an appointment to go to the diabetic clinic at the end of February which is a 2 hour appointment with GP, nurse, dietician, podiatrist etc. she said if she had any more concerns I would probably be given Metformin but for now just keep doing as I am doing now. The nurse did say if I have any issues or questions before the diabetic clinic appointment that I should make an appointment anytime to see her, she was so nice. I thought I would have got a lecture. My head is so full of information and I am finding it all a bit daunting, a bit scary even and very overwhelming. I had a bit of a panic attack and a cry about it all then old myself not to be stupid. I am sure I can get on top of it and learn how to control my diabetes and not let it control me. 😱

Cat, I'm sure you CAN get on top of things - you've already made great progress! Good to hear that the appointment went well, and it sounds like they are covering all bases with the eyes, feet and diet 🙂

Wow! I'm impressed. So there ARE some good 'uns around! I hope diet and exercise improve your control enough to avoid medication for a while yet, but don't be too upset if they suggest Metformin. All my fears about the stuff proved to be groundless (after a few short weeks of discomfort).

Thanks guys, as I said I just think my head is so full of info it's fit to burst. She also gave me an information pack to take away with me. Inside it is a book that I should take every time I go for any sort of diabetic check. It is official.... I am diabetic....eek! It's a lot to contemplate. Added to that he fact that I am not well today with this cold/sore throat which makes my voice so deep....lol. Boss told me not to go in tomorrow if I am still unwell. They don't want to catch it. Could be a day in front of the telly with a duvet and a pile of DVD's tomorrow.....ha ha! :D

Just a wee addition though which scared me a wee bit. She did stress that diabetes is NOT cureable and NOT reversible. She did say that eventually I will need more help to control it, but if I can get the weight down etc i might be able to stave off any deterioration by 10 years. Lets just hope that I can manage that because 10 years isn't oo bad. 🙂

OK, so it's not curable, but it is possible to reduce BG to non-diabetic levels. It does take hard work, and is not possible for every T2 to achieve because bodies don't always co-operate, but that shouldn't stop you trying. Go for it! 😉

Don't let this scare you. She was just trying to steer you away from all the snake oil 'reversal' schemes and 'cures' that are to be found everywhere. She was also being honest about the possibilities for the future - some people can stay free of medication for many years, others may need help sooner. What you should never feel is that, if you do eventually need medication, it is some kind of failure on your part if you have tried your best - it's just the way things are.

Thanks, just needing a pep talk/reaaurance from people who know better than I do. Back to being a bit of a wreck right now....I really need to pull myself together. It's so difficult, I really thought I could get my head round this. Apparently not now its official. :(

Thank you Northerner and LeeLee for your advice tonight. Muchly appreciated. Going to bed now....exhausted...mostly from sore throat....and crying. A good sleep will probably help me get to grips with this. Tomorrow is a new day, keeping my chin p from now on 😉
