Hi all,

Just been diagnosed after losing 5st over the course of 4 month's, GP missed all the warning signs after months of worrying myself sick and feeling like c**p, very lucky to still be here!!..was rushed to hospital where thankfully i was immediately diagnosed.

Anyway just checking in as this is all very New and there's a an awful lot to study and understand, however I'm extremely positive I'm gonna crack this and not going to let it beat me! It's my life now

Hi and welcome to the forum 🙂 we are a rather friendly bunch here so please feel free to ask any questions you may have 🙂 x

Hi Neil

Welcome to the club no-one wanted to join! - however, it has some very nice members LOL

Are you actually a hospital in-patient and still on all the assorted drips, or what?

Hi Craig, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis, particularly since the diagnosis might have been made at an earlier stage :( I also ended up in A&E after losing a considerable amount of weight, although I hadn't been to the doctor's about mine - thought it was just a bad stomach virus and would pass in a few days - wrong! 🙄

Wow, you have found us quickly, which is great 🙂 There are loads of friendly, knowledgeable people here who can help you with probably just about any question you may have. There are also lots of good success stories, where people have managed to overcome the problems and lead full and healthy lives, so your goal is certainly achievable. Whilst there is never a good time to be diagnosed, now is probably the best time so far because the knowledge, technology, treatments and support have moved on at an ever-increasing pace - I've noticed significant differences in the 9 years since my own diagnosis 🙂

What insulin have you been given, and how are you with injections and fingerpricks etc. generally? My first piece of advice would be to not get overwhelmed by everything or expect everything to immediately fall into place. There is a steep learning curve, and there can be successes and setbacks, and occasionally downright confusion, so take things at a pace that you can manage - as long as you understand the basics for now, you will pick things up as you gain experience 🙂 I would highly recommend getting a copy of the excellent Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which covers all aspects of living with Type 1 (whatever your age - I was 49!). Make sure you get the latest edition because, as I said earlier, things do move on quickly 🙂

Are you home now or still in hospital? How are you feeling? It's great when you finally get insulin after suffering for so long! 🙂 Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, and we will be more than happy to help 🙂

Hi Craig and well done for finding this forum. I can honestly say that forums like these have been the best sources of information for me over the years I've had diabetes. When you feel like it please do update us all on your treatment regime and jump in with your questions, thoughts and comments.

Wow this is overwhelming this forum has made my day ☺ I'm not gonna lie I was feeling quite alone with this daunting/intriguing task I have ahead of myself but how the tables have turned!!!!...thanks guys

On 18ml lantus
And 6ml novo rapid at the moment
And also testing my blood sugar 6 times a day, it's literally been 48 hours so apologies if my type1 slang is poor I'll get there eventually

I'll be back tomorrow after visiting GP and dietition to update the thread, this is all a new language to me haha.

Thanks once again everyone

Hello and welcome Craig 🙂 Glad you found us so soon, sorry you had to find us though!

It is one steep learning curve being handed the running of your insulin supply and blood sugar but it will start to fall into place given time and lots of practice. Having an insulin supply restored is such a relief and I hope you're feeling a lot better.

This forum is a fabulous place for help and support so please ask away on any questions that come up. I wish you well 🙂

Welcome Craig. A lot to learn very quickly at the start. But there is a lot of help available on here, so don't be afraid t ask any questions at all. Someone will come along with some help pretty quickly.

I echo the advice about the book, Type 1 Diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults. Totally ignore the age range I have, and still do, found it a great reference for everything to do with T1.

Glad you fund us so soon. Did someone recommend the forum to you at the hospital/gap?

Welcome to the forum Craig. Developing type 1 diabetes as an adult is tough, but achievable.
What is important in your life? Family, friends, sports, hobbies, interests, work etc?

Neil - learn the first law of diabetes and learn it well !

This is a marathon - not a sprint.

Bit like the old adage at work when the team had a huge task to do and didn't know where to start - Nobody can eat an elephant in one go - the trick is, to divide it up into bite-sized pieces and devour it in a planned way.

However I'm here to tell you that you will actually, never get to the end of this hypothetical pachyderm, cos things certainly DO move on and change - both with the diabetes itself and with the treatment of it - we never stop learning!

Sooo - make friends with your diabetes cos it's going to be your companion for a very long time. Much like a successful marriage - we need to learn as soon as possible how to keep it happy with the least effect on the life we wish to lead. Yes - there are things we have to do - but I am categorically not 'Jenny - the diabetic' - I'm Jenny the brunette wife, step-mum, grandma, great grandma, retired insurance broker, charity trustee, person who speaks her mind etc etc etc who also happens to have T1 D - but you wouldn't really know that unless we went out to dinner! LOL

There's quite a few of us on here who've lived with it for 40 or 50 years and still have no 'diabetes complications' although we may also have other conditions - some of which may also be auto-immune (that's relatively common but they aren't all doom and gloom anyway) - so we must have done and be doing something right, at least!

Onwards and upwards for you - and onwards and downwards to your BG!

Hi and welcome to the forum Craig. 🙂 Lots to learn at the beginning but you'll soon get the hang of it.

Welcome Craig -

This place is a fantastic help - a great source of advice, a friendly bunch too.

No one wants to be in this club - but we have to try and make the best of it, this is a good starting point.

Good luck,

Shoran

The best analogy I saw, was likening getting T1 to learning to drive. At the start driving seemed so complicated with steering, changing ger, looking in the mirror, ... After a while you just do most of it automatically, but have t deal with the unexpected along the way and no two journeys are exactly the same. So it is with T1.

Just take it step by step and keep asking for help along the way. We are here to help.

Welcome and hope the visit to the GP goes well today. There is so much to learn at the begining but it does get easier. I have found this forum to be invaluable for support and expertise, brilliant you found us so early.

Hi Craig and welcome to the gang:D.
As others have said, it's a lot to take in at first but it does become automatic, albeit with the occasional curveball thrown in just to keep you on your toes!
Any questions just fire away. No question is daft - we have all been there and will help out wherever we can.

Welcome to the Forum. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I don't know much about Type 1 but there are many members here who do and will be able to help you.

Welcome from me too! Glad you found us. It is hugely overwhelming at first, but keep coming here and you'll receive loads of encouragement and support. Remember to take a notebook with you to all appointments so you can write down anything, you will forget! Also useful to jot down any questions you think of to ask when there.

Hi Craig, same thing happened to me last week, GP was next to useless. Ended up in A&E thinking it was an allergic reaction/side effects to Metformin. turned out that I am type 1. 4 days on an insulin pump and fluids 3 days of trying to stabilize got home. Learning to manage it and getting great support from this forum and the hospital diabetes team
