Called urgently to visit doctor, hospital had rung to say my blood sugar level was 22. Another blood test for hb1c levels, this came back at 113. Allowed to try to bring levels down through diet but 8 weeks later after another blood test my hb1c level is 102. Given metformin 500. Attending a course at the end of september so will know more then. What do my levels mean please?

Hello @oklinda , welcome to the forum. Those levels are rather high. However I would like to reassure you that diabetes is a condition that with the right info , a change in diet and I think we are going to give you a great big supprise there and some exersize if able.

How did you come to be diagnosed.

It’s good to hear you are attending a course soon, but you shouldn’t have to wait till then to start learning, so ask away and we’ll do our best to help.

I am going to point you in the direction of some very helpful reading

You’ll find the above and more on
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes.

We recommend self testing on here as we are all different in what Carbohydrates our bodies can and can’t tolerate .
It’s also a good idea to keep a food diary.

The SD Codefree meter on the above link is one of the cheapest glucose meters we know of to self fund it’s testing strips are £8 Less VAT for 50 where high Street brands ate in excess of £15.

Their is a link there to a much recommended book by Gretchen Becker, type 2 diabetes the first year, she has T2 herself and goes through month by month her first year with diabetes.

It means don't wait until September, lower the amount of carbs you are eating each day because you can't cope with them - there is glucose in your blood which should be going into storage and isn't - so avoid heavy carbs such as fruit juice and most fruits, anything sugary, bread potatoes pasta breakfast cereals - I avoid anything over 10 percent carbs as part of my day to day menu and only occasionally have a small amount of high cocoa chocolate.
Hopefully the Metformin will not result in side effects, as they can be really horrible.

Hi me again. The dietary regime you decide to follow must be sustainable long term. Many here do
LCHF, low carb high fat , don’t worry about the high dat bit, it’s really normal good fats.
Others have moderated their carb intake but don’t go low carb.
Their are plenty of good substitutes too
Why not come and see what we eat

Hi oklinda, welcome 🙂 I also started at 22 and now 6 months in I’m back to between 5.5 - 6 🙂 take the advice the others have given, read as much as you can here and consider going low carb, so many of us follow the low carb diet with great results so we can’t alll be wrong 😉 Ask any question you might have and we will all do our best to support you :D

Welcome & try your best to keep off carby food. Good luck🙂

The advice above really helped me ie low carb higher healthy fat diet, upping my exercise and Metformin.
On initial diagnosis I had an HbA1c of 77 three months later it was 35 that’s within normal levels so reducing carbs certainly worked for me...
