Hi all,

Been diagnosed this morning!!!

Had gestational diabetes with 4th baby it went straight after gtt was normal, in 2013.

Had impaired gtt in April this year, then had random fasting bloods done, but hadn't fasted, came back at 12.4, this week.

Gp says high bloods and impaired gtt indicates type 2. Had a big cry, got angry with myself. Then made appointment with diabetes nurse for next week.

Joined slimming world last week, so am doing something about my weight, but bit confused how it went and has now come back, it is because of gestational diabetes and weight all combined!!!

Many Thanks for any advice

Welcome Lucy.
As I understand it, having gestational diabetes puts you at higher risk of developing T2 later in life. Gestational diabetes is, in effect, a form of T2 (in that it is to do with insulin resistance).
Have a look round the site, ask any questions that come to mind, and make a list of questions to take with you when you see the diabetes nurse - because it will be confusing at first.
Someone who knows more than me will be along shortly to point you in the right direction for intro posts and books etc 🙂

Hi Lucy, sorry to hear your diagnosis has been confirmed :( The good news is that, now you have a diagnosis, there is a lot you can do to help yourself and bring your blood sugar levels under control. Firstly, don't blame yourself - whilst it may be argued that some people don't eat well and aren't active enough, it's also true that for a lot of people there is little you could have done to avoid it. Most overweight people don't have diabetes, and there is also a suspicion that gaining weight may be a result of insulin resistance, and not the cause. So, it's a lot more complex than the public messages would have you believe.

Great that you have joined Slimming World, many of our members have had great success with them 🙂 I'd suggest having a browse through our Useful links thread - in particular I would recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should help you to understand what it is all about. Please ask us any questions you may have - there are thousands of years of combined experience with diabetes here, all from the people who know exactly what it is like to live with and manage 🙂 Let us know how the appointment goes. You might want to take along the list of checks you should now expect from the NHS, as described in the 15 Healthcare Essentials

Welcome. I was at a thing last night and someone said they prefered Slimming World. Personal I went with Shape Your Weight. It's a NHS thing, you don't have to pay for it. They don't do anything particular for diabetics thought, it's general. I don't know if it's in all areas.

Gestational Diabetes is indeed a marker for future T2 - that's precisely why they check your BG every year thereafter! I presume they explain this to people when the GD happens - if they don't then they should.

Maybe if you have put on weight, that made it happen a bit sooner, nobody knows - but it would have happened anyway. You have to just shrug your shoulders and get on with it !

It's quite bad really and scary to think, after my baby I had a gtt and it was fine. Never got followed up in 2014, as I didnt have it wasn't registered on their system. If I hadn't got back this April, or last week, I could have been walking round with type 2 for God knows how many years. I'm also a nurse having worked on diabetic wards for years, sometimes having insight knowledge is 50 times worse!!!?

Welcome to the forum Lucy77 🙂

Thanks Mark, it's all sinking in now!!! My eyes hurt from blubbing, given myself a talking too. Am only 38 so got to think positive!!!

Hi Lucy, I was diagnosed with T2 at 24 years old, 5 or so years ago. It was a huge shock, and it was discovered a few weeks ago I'm actually slow-onset T1, so on insulin now.
When I was originally diagnosed several years ago, it also came as a huge shock, and there was a lot of crying with me as well! So what I'm trying to say is that I empathise completely with you, but the support and help is out there!
I think the courses, like X-Pert or Desmond are brilliant, and a great resource for talking to other people in similar situations, your doctor or nurse should be able to refer you to one. Good luck with Slimming World too, and it's great you're taking such a positive step!

Welcome to the forum Lucy, I am newly diagnosed too (sept). It was a huge shock and I am still adjusting to every thing. Over the past 2 years I made huge changes to my diet to help me lose weight, I joined weight watchers and have so far lost just under 7 stone (diabetes runs in my family and I hoped it would reduce my chances!), so i was shocked when I was diagnosed. I am 39. My fasting blood test came back at 19 (and i made sure i fasted!). I am struggling to bring my glucose levels down, the lowest reading ive had is 13.4! I test everyday, usually before breakfast and then 2 hours after my evening meal. I am attending a living with diabetes day on monday and hoping that it will give me some more tips about what i should be doing. I was put on metformin straight away and my dose was upped to the maximum after 4 weeks as my blood glucose levels didnt seem to be changing.
I have found this forum a great place to come for help and advice.

Hi Lucy
Sorry to hear about the diagnosis, it's a pretty hard time when you're first hit with it all, so have a good cry, let it all out and then you'll feel ready to deal with it. Anyway welcome aboard, and I hope you feel a little bit better this morning.

Thanks for all your lovely replies. Have lost 6 pounds in less than a week due to cutting out c**p!!!
