Diagnosed over the weekend with Type 2 Diabetes but not sure what levels should be.

Hi, I was admitted to hospital on Sunday night after testing myself with my mother in laws Blood/Sugar kit with a warning and a reading of 33.3

The A and E department tested me again when i got there and told me that my reading was 32 and that I had Diabetes.

I thought it was something Id caused myself as on the Saturday I had drunk 3.5 litres of Pure Orange Juice, 2 litres of chocolate milk, a litre of Lucozade plus cups of coffee and water. I just couldn,t seem to quench my thirst no matter what I drunk. I spent most of the night running to toilet although it was when I was laid on the stairs landing with horrendous stomach cramps that I realised something was badly wrong.

The hospital discharged me on the Monday evening after Id been on IV drip and Insulin drip throughout the day and gave me Metformin tablets to take twice a day and a blood/sugar testing kit. I tested my blood last night before bed and it was 17.1, this morning it was 13 before breakfast and then 16.4 two hours later. I tested again just before my lunch and it was 17.9. Ive done loads of reading online and my levels seem so high so I rang the AAU where I was discharged from in hospital and they saud I shouldnt worry unless it goes above 20. Does this sound right because it contradicts what all the websites state. My eyesight is also so blurry that I cannot focus on anything more than 6 feet away. Im scared.

Welcome.
It is common to have blurry vision with high blood sugar levels. Have you got a contact number for the Diabetic team, if so the ringing them, if not why not contact your GP.
 
Hi Daz , Welcome. This must have come as a dreadful shock to you. It can take a while for your BG (blood glucose) levels to come down. Had you had any symptoms before this or did it happen fairly suddenly?
I think it may be best if @Northerner speaks to you as he has far more experience than I do. Don't worry he'll be along shortly.

20 mmol is rather high, but as your on Metformin, (which is a perfectly good med for T2s) their isn't too much you can do to lower your BG levels other than drink more , water would be best, the last thing you need ATM is sugary drinks or fruit juice, diet drinks are ok , to help flush the glucose out ( this was what your body was trying to do when you had that unquenchable thirst)

I assume the hospital are going to arrange further appointments for you ? or have you just been told to see your gp.

Their is a lot of misinformation out there , so it's best to stick to recognised diabetis sites such as Diabetes uk.

For the time being Try to cut down on the starchy carbohydrates, potatoes, rice, bread esp white and pasta , instead fill up on vegetables that grow above ground . We turn these carbs into glucose very quickly.

Just to give you a few ideas as you're probably wondering what on earth you can eat. Providing you like/eat them things like meat of all colours, high meat content sausages and burgers, bacon, cheese, eggs cooked anyway you like , yogurt
If you want biscuits rich tea is the better choice

Welcome to the forum, Daz6170.
It's actually better to reduce blood glucose levels gradually, rather than suddenly, as rapid reduction will give you feelings of hypoglycaemia a your body has got used to higher levels.
Your eyesight will return to normal over the next couple of weeks. Definitely don't get your eyes tested until things get less blurry.

Going to see a diabetic nurse in morning si hopefulkt will be better informed once Ive seen them.
 
While readings of between 13 - 17 are high, they are half of what you had: 33. It's alright to get your figures down in stages.

Thanks Northener, I will ask my diabetic nurse tomorrow morning. How do they determine the difference between Type 1 and Type 2?
