You’re doing fine, the dietician sounds like she needs to give better and clearer advice though. It’s way too strict to only eat foods with less than 5g carb per 100g, and even if she meant sugars that is still too strict and would mean cutting out loads of healthy foods like strawberries. It’s irresponsible of the dietician to advise this especially given i think i read that you take lantus and gliclazide which means your blood sugar could go too low if you suddenly cut carbs out.
Keeping a food diary, noting the total carbs, and slowly making gradual improvements is a good plan. You’re clearly doing the right things given how much your a1c has dropped.
Remember it is the total carbohydrate which is the important value to look at as there are many things which would not have sugar or be low sugar but will have a high carbohydrate content so would still not be too good for you.
Many food promoted as healthy on the basis of low fat are not necessarily so for Type 2 diabetics as they can be higher in carbs.
A sensible approach is to limit your carbs to an amount per day that you can tolerate split between meals. That amount will vary in different people, some may have 130g per day others much lower than that, but that is usually a good starting point. But make sure you are looking at the total carbs not just sugars and include drinks as well if you have milk in your tea or coffee.
I think I may have started a can of worms when asking for member comments!!! It had been my gut feeling the dietician was giving unclear advice.
Anyway Matilda-rose, your measurements of your carbs match exactly what I calculated with my NutraCheck app, except you didn't count your carbs for your apple, which would have added 10-18gm carbs to your 117.6. Great evening meal and I think if you wanted to, you could reduce your carbs at breakfast and lunch. You could have just one shredded wheat, with some berries and sugar free Alpro. I use their Almond milk, but they do a sugar free coconut version. Bananas and apples are very high in carbs - how about seasonal strawberries! I was surprised at the carb value of Ryvitas - Hovis does a low carb bread, and there are others. I personally have a small Warburtons wholemeal loaf at 8.9gm carbs per slice, so you could make a sandwich for less carbs than your Ryvita, or have an open sandwich.
Of course you could be really naughty (said I with tongue firmly in cheek) and ask her to draw up a one week eating plan where every single item on it was less than 5gm carbs and 3gm fat per 100gm. Lots of salad and leafy vegetables, steamed fish but not a lot else! Joking aside your blood glucose reduction shows you were doing just fine!

Cereals are definitely not promoted by people with type two - even those who can manage porridge usually measure out the amount carefully.
My personal cut off point is 10 percent carbs, though many of the things I eat are lower. I do eat the high cocoa chocolate from Lidl, but a bar lasts over a month.
I am far more likely to eat sausages and stir fry or steak and mushrooms, or have a salad with meat or fish for breakfast, than to have a grain based food.
I was in hospital with DKA & diagnosed on 7 April. . HbA1c was 104. BS 33.4. In for 9 days.(April 7 -16). At my review last Thursday my HbA1c was 49 & BS 5.7 post breakfast of 2 Weetabix. BP was good & consultant very pleased with progress. I am able to eat cereals without a spike. Just the normal expected rise post meals. Have tried to contact dietician, but left message asking her to call me back. I'm going to continue being careful until I hear from her. My body needs a good breakfast, otherwise I would collapse. For dinner I'm having gammon, broccili, 2 small Royal Jersays & some fresh pineapple . My mind is frazzled with so much conflicting advice, though I am very grateful for any & all support. It seems that I am fortunate to be able to eat weetabix, porridge, shredded wheat, overnight oats etc. I hade 2 weetabix for breakfast with coconut milk & a nectarine & for lunch I had 2 shredded wheat, again with coconut. For dinner I had gammon, fat 19.6, carbs less than 0.5, broccili, carbs 7, 2 Jersey Royals, 80gms, carbs 12, & pineapple 60gms, carrbs 6. Total carbs for dinner 26 at most. Hope that is right. I have just started SW this week, & am aware they advocate free carbs which I can't have. Just need to get weighed weekly. Have lost 2st 4 lbs since admission & diagnosis. 13lbs unintentionally in hospital. #confused
I assumed the pineapple was swede until I read your text!
I think you may have the carbs wrong for it. Pineapple is a high carb fruit (22g/100g carbs from a quick search) and that looks like a lot of it. If you weighed it at 60g then that would make it at least 13g carbs.
