Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All,

Got diagnosed about a month ago after my blood tests around my Heart checks (I had surgery about ten/eleven years ago). Its Type 2 but that’s as much as know about it as far as diagnosis is concerned.

Away to the hospital next week for my eye exam (so looking forward to that) and going along with flow on “what next?”.

Getting my head around the whole life style changes (again!) so got a few things started, which incorporates the whole heart thing as well. Challenging but nothing that I’m not used to or too daunting (it is what it is and I do have options, at least).

Determined that this will not take over my life as it’s there to be lived rather than be feared and I’ve come to terms that this is one more thing to consider in the every day. If anything, it is spurring me on with more momentum to sort myself out and turn things around. It’s not easy but nothing is these days and, don’t get me wrong, it has been a bit a rollercoaster ride with all the “other” stuff going on at the moment.

Being a newbie to all this, if you’ve got one ”golden nugget” of advice to give anyone starting out with Diabetes, what would it be?

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear you now have something additional to contend with. My golden nugget is to educate yourself about your condition and make the changes to your diet as that is the most powerful thing.
Depending on what your HbA1C is will determine how much work you will need to do. There are plenty of resources here, the Learning Zone has many links.
I found the principals in this link make lots of sense and I followed that and reduced my HbA1C to normal. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Obviously you have to take your heart issues into account but hopefully you will find something useful.

Hi KJSkinner, welcome to the forum.

It's great that you've adopted such a positive attitude in this situation. I think you hit the nail on the head by understanding that your diagnosis, at this stage, is an opportunity to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

There is lots of conflicting information out there, partly because everyone is different so I'd focus on knowing your numbers and testing which meals work for you and planning around that.

We've got a really good food section on the forum so do have a look at that for some inspo and let us know if we can help in any way.

Thanks Cherrelle,

it is what it is, for me. It’s taken a wee while for my head to get around it and to understand the various impacts (still learning!). To know I have options is big thing - it gives hope in choice to me as it could have been a lot worse.

Thanks for the pointers everyone! Making the difference already both mentally and physically
