hi every one l just had my yearly chat with my d nurse she was not help full , she said my sugars are high ,she asked me what my diet was l said l some days have a dinner but some days l just have a sandwich, l told her l have cut out all fruit as it gives me stomick pains & fruit juice , she then when on a bout trafic lights WHAT l found her really un help full as if she was just reading from a book , lm so angery

Many nurses and GPs don't understand nutrition as it's not part of their training. Our problem is carbs. Ignore Traffic Light labelling which is silly and doesn't follow good science. Look at the back of food packaging and look for Total Carbs and keep those controlled

hi dave, thanks for replying to my post , she really got under my skin with traffic lights ,lve asked if l can talk to a nother nurse, she didnt help with the fruit thing ,some times l dont feel like eating a large dinnerand just have a sandwich l hope l get more sense out of the other nurse.

Welcome
I am sure you will find more help on here than your nurse is giving
On the other hand I suspect that traffic lights are fairly low carbohydrate....

And high in iron?

It sounds like you maybe taking on too many carbs, eating a sandwich is likely to be carb heavy because of the bread, what does dinner consist of when you have one, do you carb count. It may seem that because she was using a book to give you advice was wrong but I get most of my advice from books, I would say sharing a little more about what you are actually eating with the group so people can give you suggestions might be useful

Hi @rosie1
YES your right some of the DSN’s just talk rubbish (not all) about what we should eat to help control diabetes

I remember when I was first diagnosed being told I need to loose weight & quickly !
she then told me to eat loads of fruit & fill up on Carbohydrates but eat a virtually fat free diet

whereas I’ve found out for myself after taking advice on here plus seeing the same talked about oy a Dr on TV, (Dr in the house) it’s on you tube now
Carbohydrates raise our levels

I’m eating not a lot less fruit these days but eating Nuts & Berries instead
Ironically also lots of foods some people would say are high in fat, but finally loosing the weight and practically halved my HbA1c score...

thank u goody bags, l some times dont know what to eat, l leave on my own which dosent help

Ah really sorry to read this @rosie1 - how frustrating for you :(

Rather than the traffic lights, I think you should look at total carbohydrate.

Have you looked at the ‘what did you eat yesterday’ thread? There are pages and pages of people sharing what they have been eating. You might find some helpful ideas?

yes l got very upset l dont ever wont to talk to that person again

Hi @rosie1 I am always surprised when I have a sandwich, as it tends to end up higher in carbs than our other meals. We aim for about 30g of carbs at each meal. If I make a sandwich it ends up with 50g, but is so yummy. We save those for when we are out for a day of walking when I need a few extra carbs to keep me going.

The what did you eat yesterday thread gives lots of other ideas. I have just found some fabulous sour dough crackers which are just 2 g of carbs each. That becomes quite a feast for lunch along with some cheese, celery, peanut butter, tomatoes, ... I end up well within my target.

@SB2015 Those crackers sound nice , Don’t mind me asking but where can I buy them

The crackers are Peter’s Yard. I love them and know that I can load them with very yummy stuff for lunch and still stay below 20g of carbs.

I know just how you feel, so often I've come out of these appointments absolutely fuming. Consultants are often the worst - had one tell me I was getting diabetic neuropathy... "No dear, I just have a lot of hard skin on my feet because I do a lot of long distance walking" ‍♀️ but he insisted and also recommended I buy a higher quality footwear! Being very short of money at that time, I was rather cross!
Food advice is usually terrible - either completely unrealistic or too general to be helpful. Have to say, I love the nurse at my GP, because she actually listens and appreciates that I just might know something about the condition I've had for nearly 30 years! I hope you can find someone more helpful, but just wanted to say, I sympathise xx
