Diabetics to lose driving licences after hypoglycaemic episodes

Mixed views on this one, any changes that improves road safety must be encouraged and we do unfortunately read in the press that a diabetic driver has caused a accident due to hypoglycemia, the downside is we are now going to see drivers covering up their tracks and not declaring hypos or insisting that their awareness is fine when attending medical checks when the opposite is true.

The DVLA rely on honesty when reviewing driving licenses for insulin users, I've never lied and don't ever intend to in the future. I just got my license renewed for 3 years last month, took forever and a day as I have had diabetic retinopathy in the past and needed to pass a strict field vision test, but to be honest I wouldn't have it any other way as my safety and those around me are of great concern to me, should the day come where I have to hand in my license - then so be it!
 
Just to clarify, I never have and never will lie or mislead, but I can see why some would who rely on their licence for income and/or mobility.

There are rural areas (and prob urban too) which have little or no public transport cover and no supermarkets to walk to.

The only option for them is to run higher BGs and risk future complications or be less than honest.

Hi this story is of interest as a driver. Thanks Siobhan for providing all that great and accurate info on flying with type 1!! Rob the only country which had requirement for with copilot is Australia on private flying, canada is also same but that's for airline where you legally need two pilots regardless of any health. There are also no requirements for use of CGMs in UK, USA or Canada. I believe Australia may of just implied CGMs if flying solo, before they had flight with co pilot only,so this is a major step.

I hope my PhD gets funding and I can go ahead to prove the points we need making!!!
