Hi there,

So I posted previously mentioning how I was diagnosed in September with T2 Diabetes in September. There had been warning signs previously even back in December 2019 when my blood sugar levels were high when tested during a hospital admission but I foolishly didn't get it diagnosed and avoided tests for years. I was scared and thought if I lost weight etc. it wouldn't be a problem.

Any way, I went to seen an endocrinologist a few weeks ago and he called me today to tell me my albumin/creatine ratio (I think I'm saying that right?) is about 400mg when a normal value is about 3mg. He is referring me on to a renal specialist but he is linking this with the diabetes/diabetic nephropathy. I asked him is this is reversible and he said maybe but as he's not a specialist can't say for sure.

I'm really really worried now. I'm quite young and I've had to deal with a lot of stress recently over the past couple of years and I'm now terrified that due to my ignorance and recklessness I could be at the point of no return/no repair.

Has anyone else been in this situation and how have you coped or reversed this? What should I do?

Welcome to the forum @Purple Panda

Sorry to hear about your test results.

the best thing to do is to make sure you attend your appointments, and get things checked regularly. Then make whatever changes are needed to gradually normalise your BG levels, which usually helps slow any progress if damage has been done, and to keep an eye on your blood pressure too.

Hopefully the specialist will give you an idea of an effective treatment plan.

Have you managed to have much success in losing the weight you were trying to?

Hi thanks for your reply. Does this mean it’s irreversible and it will eventually progress and curtail my life etc? I’m only in my 30s this is terrifying me. I’m struggling to lose weight etc I’m just so depressed all the time eating junk and not caring but now I’m in serious trouble.

Hi. My wife is CKD Stage 5 so I understand the concern. You MUST reduce weight thru a low-carb diet and ensure your BP is in good range. There are different causes of CKD and some are treatable and some less so. Tests can include ultrasound scans and a biopsy if relevant. Take note of any medications you take as many (most) can cause kidney damage and that includes ibuprofen and other NSAIDs. Read the leaflets and Google for information

I'm afraid I don't think anyone on the forum is qualified to answer that as it depends on the specifics of your case- so seeing the specialists and having the tests etc done is really important.

My understanding is that knowing the 'stage' of your kidney issues is really important and will hugely help to guide you and get your head around whether or not things are reversible.
