Diabetic Eye Screening

I hope you get a good result. And if you get a good screener next time, they might give you a clue on the day. All the ones I've seen have said they couldn't see anything bad, but that it would have to be confirmed by the specialist. Makes it less scary when the letter drops on the doormat.

The sooner I know the better. Kind of worried in case they found anything. I know just because my mum is diabetic and blind doesn't mean that it will happen to me but its always there in the back of my mind. But my mum's mum was also blind, there is a history of diabetes in my family on my mums side. I just need to know all is okay and I'm not heading down that road too. Or if they do find something it can be dealt with as soon as possible.

You're already doing something by taking control of your BGs. As others have posted, background changes can disappear with good control. I've been diagnosed a long time, and have a similar family history, but have had no changes detected yet. Let's hope the same goes for you.

I agree with LeeLee, don't go on your mother and grandmother's experiences - things have improved radically in recent years in this respect, and there is monitoring and treatments available that wouldn't have existed in their day 🙂

My screening service are slightly annoying in that they only send you a letter if they find something, so you are left wondering for weeks hoping that you don't hear from them! Although, as I said earlier, your GP will usually be informed within a couple of weeks, so it might be worth asking if you have an appointment due for any reason 🙂

Thanks LeeLee and Northerner, I will wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks. If I hear nothing I will phone my GP surgery to see what information they might have. It's just a bit scary when I have seen what my grandmother and mother have gone through with being blind and the changes it made to their lives. I remember a few years ago an optician asking if I knew how they both went blind and I said no. The optician asked me, doesn't it worry you then??? 😱 I hadn't been worried up until he said that. You are both right I know and I'm sure it doesn't mean I will go blind, but you know how it is, there's always that wee niggle at the back of your mind. 🙂
