Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello its first time i have eva used this site however i feel it is now time to get some help off other diabetics as I have recently got with a new partner and struggling in the bedroom  Am wondering if anyone has ever suffred from ed (getting up but not staying up) after a slightly prolonged time of having high blood sugars. Am actually getting really worried now and am hoping that now my control is tight again if this problem will correct itself or do i need to go get some professional help? I was diagnosed with type 1 only 3 years ago and hoping it is only a psychological problem however any advice from anyone with experience of this would be greatly appreciated thank you for reading my thread spk soon c ya

ED is one of the many symptoms of diabetes. GPs are very aware of this.
It is as well to discuss it with your GP. I did only a week ago and amongst the many tests he did was check for testicular cancer, general health check and a blood sample for testosterone level. This was slightly below norm, but taking additional hormone could lead to prostate cancer.
No problem. He prescribed Sildenafil 25mg tabs ( increase dose if needed) {Viagra}
The ED is a well documented side effect of diabetes.

Sexual dysfunction

I know your talking about the male problems with diabetes but what about in women, my drive got up and left the country a few year ago and i just blamed my depression as it came back in spates but since being mistakenly type 2 and now a few months later type 1 and on novorapid and novomix it has gone for good and set up shop somewhere else, the thing is i used to love sex, i mean 4 or 5 times a day so to have no drive whatsoever is like my world has come to an end, do i need to see a doctor? and do any other women have the same problems?

Help

Thanks Kojack, i have had a look but it just states the obvious that i know already, about losing feeling in those areas not really about your drive moving to another planet! I have lost everything since being diagnosed, most of it went before but are all symptoms of diabetes, i feel like i have been robbed of life, no alcohol as too scared to drink it, my food, well steriods ruined that for me years ago, no sex, i mean where does it end, i didn't ask for this and thanks to 14 yrs of steriods i may as well be dead! oh and as for grouchy...i bring new meaning to the word BITCH, again whenever my sugars are too high or too low

Hello and welcome
however i feel it is now time to get some help off other diabetics as I have recently got with a new partner and struggling in the bedroom  ... Am actually getting really worried now

It's at least partially a pschological problem as you are worried about it. It's a vicous circle, as you can't perform because you are worried about it then that makes you more worried about it in future.

You should speak to your GP about the problem. I know it's not easy, but the sooner you do, the easier it is to get sorted.

If it's a physical problem then there are lots of things that an help. There is also a lot that can be done to help with the psycological side as well.

Make sure your partner is aware of the problems otherwise they may feel that they are part of the problem.

tahnx guys

thank you everyone for ur replys I think i will keep my sugars down for a few weeks and see how it goes. Am still hoping it is my system settling down if doesnt go well gona go get sum tests done at the doctors, oh I thought id mention my gf is really understanding and feel ded lucky however how long can that last time will tell cheers everybody ( were thers a will there is a way ay)

bear in mind that there are other things you can do too, kissing, cuddling, loads of foreplay. all this will help you both as you are giving your partner pleasure and that is a 2 way feeling. i know sometimes i dont want to or i feel i cant, but i take a deep breath and pay lots of attention to my husband which in the long run is beneficial. he feels loved and i feel happy because i can still show him how much i want him. and next time, who knows...............!

I have never blamed my diabetes for anything - but I am lucky - I do not know life without it. At the end of the day - I know that you are feeling very bitter about it - but there are much much worse things in life. Not helpful - but feel very sad that you blame it for everything that is wrong.

Me neither Admin!

and as a T1 for most of my life - I have never ever found it to have affected my sex drive. I am sorry you feel that that is the problem - but perhaps once you feel more in control and relaxed about life it may creep back - I hope so!
I know it is different for women compared to men - and with good bs control - in general quality of life, and other things creep back up!

Actually i don't blame the diabetes, it's more the steriods i blame for ruining my life, it has given me diabeties, osteoarthritis, made me 19 stone instead of the 8 stone i used to be, i am now a cripple in a wheelchair who couldn't do exercise to lower my blood sugar and weight even if i wanted to, i was a professional dancer up untill i was 22 and then my life changed for the worse so yes i am bitter but the diabetes was just the icing on the cake

Hi angeleyes I was on steroids as a kid

Hi Angel eyes

All my conditions and complications I suffer from they believe were caused by massive steroid doses back when i was a youngster.
I was prescribed them to save me from a life threatening illness, so I am grateful.
I can sympathise though with you and what you are saying it is diificult..
Keep on smiling 🙂

Hi Angel30eyes,
I'm really sorry that you have had a rough time of it and i do understand, although i must say that i'm 49 and have a younger partner (15 years younger) i was diagnosed with T2 7 years ago and so far have not suffered any kind of sexual problems (and hope i never do!)
It must be very difficult for you and, everyone else who suffers from it not forgetting your partners no doubt its hard for them too !

As Daisy says hopefully in time all will be well but, if you are at all in any doubt then do get help i used to be one of those lost souls who would keep everthing to myself and not bother but i don't honestly think thats the way to go now as help is out there.
Best of luck lynn x

My husband is having the same problems and its getting him depressed, I just joined this site to see if anyone else had problems. He has been prescribed Viagra but as he is on 2 lots of BP medication its not a good thing to take as it raises blood pressure.

He has another problem as well which is embarassing, before he was diagnosed Type2 he kept wetting the bed, once he got his meds sorted he was fine but now he has started wetting the bed again which isnt nice for either of us, is this a problem diabetics have?

i have heard of diabetics having this problem actually, i think it's due to the nerves.

Hi Nilla

At least on this board we can talk openly and these 'side effects' are more common than we realise.

I am on medication for blood pressure amongst many other things but my GP, whom I hold in great respect, has prescribed me with viagra starting with 25mg.
Before I was diagnosed diabetic, I was almost incontinent but thank goodness I awakened with an erection which was a sign that I urgently needed a pee and in effect stopped me having one in bed.

It sounds as if your husband sleeps deeply and this side effect could well be sorted out by your GP or diabetic nurse. The more of an issue that is made of it, the worse it is likely to become.

Take care

hey, i just came across this site today after searching and searching for some place where i can find information for my b/y in regards to ED with diabetes.

We have been together for 3 years and he has the same issues you spoke about, he gets viagra on perscription from the doctor. He also can't climax which again is appartantly another side effect, unfortuneatly the doctors don't seem to know for sure if this is a physical or mental issue with the diabetes.

Oh and he has type 1 diabetes and has had it for about 20 years since he was a little boy.

I have had bouts of ED, and mentioned it a few years ago to my GP, who examinded me, got out her drug reference book and went carefully through the options outlining the side effects etc with me, before we reached a decision.

I used Cialis when I needed to for a few years, the important bit is when I needed to, always tried without, knowing they were there as backup, sometimes they didn't work, but more often than not I needed nothing.

Recently I changed to another type (don't ask me what I can't remember) as when I used Cialis I got terrible neck ache and headaches, the new ones seem good, I have the 10mg dose and my GP told me if one doesn't work, take another one, if I regulary need two, all I have to do is get my repeat dispensing prescription ammended to 20mg.

Just relax, know whats there as insurance and build up slowly, lots of massage, foreplay etc. There isn't a rush 😉

D
