Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed in sept last year but only saw a diabetes nurse in June . I was on metaformin and glickizide which brought my readings down after a few weeks. But was suffering with bad side effects so then got put on slow release and extended release but was getting worse readings was going high and low so gp took me off gliclizide and put me on empaglaflozen but then got bad thrush but still being bad on metaformin so got took off that and put back on gliclizide but then saw a consultant who put me on ozempic but yet again had bad side effects so diabetes nurse put me on humulin i so I’m on that 18 units twice a day but my bg readings still high so on Friday also put me on humalog clear 3 x a day but the nurse said I’m type two slow releasing to tupe 1 does anyone know what this means

I think this might be what she is referring to, people who don't respond to the medications normally prescribed for Type 2 are thought to have a type of diabetes more akin to Type 1 and would be treated in much the same way, but is called 1.5 or LADA.
Slowly evolving immune-mediated diabetes, or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), is a form of diabetes that exhibits clinical features similar to both type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). It is an autoimmune form of diabetes, similar to T1D, but patients with LADA …
There a quite a few people here who are diagnosed as such so they may be able to explain more.
Welcome to the forum by the way.

Thank you for your reply I was looking on line but couldn’t find anything for it

Before I got to the end of your post @Zoey27 i was thinking Type 1. LADA is just another form of Type 1. It’s not a term all people use eg my consultant doesn’t. However, my consultant does call a certain diabetes “Type 1 and a half” because it’s a type between Type 1 and Type 2 with a noticeable level of insulin resistance.

From what your nurse said (is this a proper DSN or just a nurse at your GP surgery?) it sounds like they were just saying that you have a slow-onset Type 1. That’s not unusual in adults as Type 1 generally comes on more slowly in adulthood than childhood. It’s a condition you can develop at any age.

Now you have the correct diagnosis push to get referred to a consultant team and remember you can access the various tech approved for Type 1s if appropriate. Have you been told how to carb count with your Humalog?

Thank you so much for your reply. I was seen by a diabetes consultant in June as my appointment with the diabetes nurses was cancelled due to being off ill . but my readings were high from March and not well in may so had me meet him at the hospital incase I had dka. Which I didn’t so was starting me on ozempic but had bad side effects with it . So the diabetes nurse rang me to see how I was doing ? so she said I had to get straight to her to start insuilin so had to tell her what had happened from sept 20 when I found out to now . That’s when she said she thinks I’m type 2 slow releasing to type 1 there the proper diabetes nurses . I have a gp nurse who’s also diabetes nurse but she s useless as came to her with all my symptoms last year and dismissed it all

No I have t been told about humalog she just started me on it on Friday and gave me a booklet on it so started me on 6 units 3x a day first as my readings still high so she didn’t want it to come down to quick

Hi. I'm one of those Type 1.5 people. I wonder if you've been prescribed Ozempic whether you have excess weight? Most T1.5/LADAs will be slim at diagnosis due to the body fat burning as it doesn't produce enough insulin to metabolise carbs. If you do have excess weight then keeping the carbs down is the highest priority and T1.5 becomes less likely. A C-Peptide test would show whether you have high insulin (T2) or low (T1.5/LADA). Note that viruses can cause beta cell death so it's not just a natural auto-immune problem (not many experts understand this). I had a high white cell count just before my unexpected diagnosis which may explain my own T1.5.

When the consultant prescribed ozempic it wasn’t for that it was for getting my readings down as they was going up to 30s so wanted to get it down and was going to add insuilin also but the nurse took me off it and put me on two insuilin s as still not come down

Sorry you’ve been having such a rough ride with your diagnosis @Zoey27

Hope you get some clarity about your diabetes type soon.

If it does end up being a slow-onset T1 rather than insulin-dependent T2 (the types don’t change into each other, but they can be confused initially) then a book like ‘Think Like A Pancreas’ (Gary Scheiner) might be really helpful to help you understand the ins and outs of T1 🙂
