Is there a data set available for the UK of the numbers of Type 1 vs Type 2 Diabetics year on year ?

As the number of diabetics increase are there proportionally more Type 2s than previously, or does the ratio stay the same ?

If the "Obesity Epidemic" really is to blame, then surely the number of Type 2's would be showing as a greater proportion of the total.

But fewer Type 2s remaining undiagnosed, and also the lowering of the threshold for diagnosis in recent times would also have this effect.

The State of the Nation Report provides a lot of data on diabetes in the UK, the downloads for the different parts of the UK are on the right hand panel. I don't know if it specifically answers your question but it may help.

Also look up the National Diabetes Audit which has information from many of the GP surgeries in the UK.

Be aware that I would challenge some of this data. I'm am one of many LADAs (=T1) wrongly diagnosed and still listed as T2. One day this will be recognised and help provide the best database for research and diagnosis.

Absolutely agree @DaveB - I’ve been seeing some academic HCPs on twitter talking about this recently. Mis-classification affected something like 15-20% of one large T2 population (thousands) in Edinburgh which all had c-peptide checks on spec.

Another mentioned a study where 50% of a group were reclassified (but I’m not sure what question marks or suspicions might have grouped them together)

These was a thing on BBC news website about ‘t1s’ being able to come off insulin, when they actually meant misclassified MODY who had a T1 diagnosis.
