Diabetes Medals

I am.a very long term Type I diabetic. Over the years I have read stories of people being awarded medals by Diabetes UK for living on insulin for 50.anf 60 years. Looking these up I see there are also medals for 70 and 80 years. However an internet search only found one example of each. Does anyone know how many of each medal have been awarded?

Can't help with your answer, just wanted to point out that many people do not apply for the medals. So obviously a lot more people have lived and are living with long term (50+) years diabetes than the amount of medals given out.🙂

Well presumably Diabetes UK hold that information - but as a lot of the info they need to be given about recipients is personal info, they could not, legally, release it to all and sundry.

I don't think it would be a marvellous idea to publish it openly on the internet, even if it is only vague numbers.

There's an American gentleman who posts on the net called Richard. He has been type 1 for over 70 years I believe.

My Uncle who passed away in May was 85 and diabetes lived with him for 56 years.

Yep Sue! - Richard157 ! Think he still posts on one of the American FB diabetes sites occasionally? One of the Mayo Clinic's Golden Oldies. Loved all his tales of what went on at the Mayo reunions they used to organise for them, with all the wives and husbands royally entertained.

Whoa! Sorry but I think you are over thinking it. I am only interested in simple totals like:

Alan Nabarro medal (50 years) - 9,999
Robert Lawrence medal (60 years) - 999
John Macleod medal (70 years) - 99
HG Wells medal (80 years) - 9

So no worse than any other numbers published by NHS England or ONS..

Maybe @Josh DUK knows the answer?

I believe there is a Diabetes UK medallists group on Facebook, and know some of the people who attend occasional meetups from there.

The Joslin centre in the US has its own medallist programme I think, and have used the cohort for some interesting scientific research. Including the amount of ‘home grown’ insulin many long-term T1s still produce.

Ive asked the helpline and they said, this year so far 385 and around 700 a year go out and we have been sending for over 20 yrs.
