A portion of veg was always described as 'what you can hold in both hands, cupped together' rather than a specific weight. Bit silly really cos you couldn't do that when its cooked but raw eg cabbage will be chopped/sliced before cooking therefore shedloads of air spaces but that would look really scant (miserable) once cooked and served - and that's one of the least carbohydrate vegetables so it's quite OK to eat more than that amount - whereas (shelled)peas or sweetcorn kernels are the complete opposite - hardly any airspace before cooking yet they're both higher carbohydrate.

How are you doing today catmumzer??
I found the first week or so quite emotional. Then I decided to attack my food habits... both quantity amd quality. Its been a journey!!! I didn't know, for example, that my 54 year old body won't tolerate beans... and I thought they would be a staple food for me.

Always wondered if it meant raw or cooked. Cheers.
In terms of calorie or carbohydrate content it's best to measure (either raw or cooked and use the appropriate nutritional guide).

In terms of "5 a day" and advice like that it's all much vaguer than that (and such guidelines vary quite a bit between countries) so worrying about details just isn't so useful.

I found that my blood glucose was puzzlingly high after eating beans or peas - it turns out that some people can extract more carbs than the listed numbers.
I did have some problems after taking the Atorvastatin and Metformin prescribed at first, but I got a mobility scooter and a bus pass. The scooter has been the most useful as I can go door to door in it, and if I do things such as run over my foot with it (sigh) then I can nip out and go into a shop for a bottle of milk no trouble, and it is so cheap to run - I bought one second hand and it really is just pennies to charge the batteries. It also means I can go down to the beach and not have to look for a parking spot, or pay for one. It wasn't so bad when the children were at home, but for just me on a pension it had become too much of a luxury.
My neighbour gets deliveries of groceries and frozen foods and the delivery driver brings it in for her and even checks that there is no expired food lurking in the back of the fridge, she puts the new things at the back. When I am off in the camper van I set up a folding table by the door and sit down to prepare food, then cook with a portable stove on the table. It means I have enough energy for evening excursions.

I have been very sleepy and tired. My sleep apnea messes with my sleep cycle. Only just managed to get a meal for the first time today after 26 hrs or more involuntary fasting. Hope you're well.

Hey! I'm not a doctor but that sounds like hard work on your body.

Thx Drummer,
I'm back on track after a bad cold which has thrown lots of things off. My blood sugar control seems really sensitive to a few kg increase in weight ... around 62/3 I'm in the normal/prediabetic but 64 + is my no go zone where my averages and spikes go high. I'm back to removing those kg!!!!

Ps running over your foot does not sound fun at all!!

It is a bit bad.
I've had to get antibiotics as I think it has induced cellulitis - but at least I am absolutely confident that every single nerve ending in my foot is in full working order and able to transmit Diabolical levels of pain.

Went to the session managed to get a lift. It was cancelled! Not enough bums on seats.

How frustrating for you @Catmumzer

Could they not have run the session anyway for those who did show up?

And if they didn’t have enough booked in before today, they could have at least contacted people to let them know :(

Yeah that’s rubbish not to let people know when they’ve sorted time off work / childcare / lifts / etc
