Type 2
hi I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and also have an under active thyroid. Is there anyone else who has both any tips on how to manage?

My gp has started me on 1 metformin a day increasing to 3 a day which seems a lot ?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
As you take thyroid meds then that solves the thyroid problem so doesn't come into managing your diabetes.

Diabetes wise you need to be very aware of the amount of carbs and the type you eat. The lower your numbers the less meds you need.

Hi NBuckner, welcome to the forum.

Glad you've found us as it can be a bit daunting when first diagnosed. Do you k ow what your HbA1c was? It's your average glucose reading over the last three years which your GP would have used to make a diagnosis.

Depending on what your HbA1c numbers were to start with, your GP should prescribe the appropriate medication needed to bring your numbers down safely. It's worth noting the number down so you can track your progress.

There are a few moving parts that you may need to get your head around re managing your diabetes. Firstly, adapting the way you eat. You're essentially looking to reduce carbs and sugars from your diet which you can find out more about here https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes.

I'm not sure if you've been advised to test your blood sugar after eating but it can help to find out the impact that your meals are having on your levels. We've got info on our main site that talks about this further https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/testing.

Have a look around and let us know if there's anything specific you'd like help with as we're always happy to help 🙂

Thank you the information you have given me is really helpful and I will look at the links.
I have annual blood tests as both my parents are diabetic and now having underactive thyroid has increased my risk.

My hbA1c was 44 in May and is now 50 my fast blood sugar test was 7. I am seeing the diabetic nurse to discuss further.

Thank you it’s reassuring knowing the forum is there.
Regards
Nicola

You are just into the diabetic zone so it should be perfectly possible with some dietary changes to bring it down. At that lebvel I would hope you would be given the opportunity to try the dietary route before medication.
This link may help you to find a way of modifying your diet and give you some menu ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
