l have been a shift worker all my working life and l have come to the conclusion that this has contributed to my diabetes,l am back at work after last week annual leave and have been finishing at midnight to 1.00 am the last 2 nights- l am recording 7s on my BG monitor when l have got up the last 2 mornings any advice or thinking would be appreciated.Whats the best thing to have to eat before going to bed.

As you're just on a low dose of metformin then it's probably best to avoid too much carbohydrate, so things like cheese, cold meats, vegetables (not potatoes) are probably best. 🙂

Probably best to keep it light as, with no exercise, it will lay in your stomache. How hungry do you feel? I like to have 3 or 4 ryvita crispbreads, a couple with sardine paste and a couple with thinly sliced cheese and thinly sliced pickled onion. If I was hungrier, I might bulk it out with a tomato and onion salad.

Thankfully the days where I longed for a pork pie and peas or a big curry before I go to bed are gone. I can feel my pancreatic islets wanting to clog up at the very thought of it, my beta cells solidified in a sugary ghee coffin.

thanks for the replies whats the best thing to take to work in sandwich box any suggestions will be be taken on board!

What would you normally take along Charlie, if you didn't have diabetes? Then perhaps people can suggest some alternatives based on the things you enjoy 🙂

Hard to tell without knowing what breads you can eat, if any. I usually take some rye bread and some pumpernickel. I like black forest smoked ham, havarti cheese, garlic sausage, pepper salami and smoked salmon with either cream cheese or dill sauce. In the box I always have things like pickled cucumber, hot wax peppers, lots of cherry tomatoesand maybe a small packet of pork scratchings. Sometimes a pear or apple. I usually like to have something warm so I have a flask of soup. The Maggi packet soup range are tasty and tend to be low carb, even the ones with noodles.

Other nice sliced cheeses are the dutch varieties, edam, maasdam, gouda etc and then appenzeller, jarlsberg, emmenthaler. There's a decent variety there that won't fall to pieces.

I also go to a farmers market every couple of weeks where a butcher always has very good quality roat pork, roast ham, roast beef and tongue. They all taste good on rye bread.

If you take some pickled onion in a separate container and maybe a small bottle of tobasco sauce which you can use on some meats and maybe in some soups, even a small bottle of worcestershire sauce, you can make a nice meal.

The main thing is to have pots and containers and a flask.

Oh, and, a bottle of something to drink or flask of tea.

Thanks Yorksman for the great reply l really appreciate it,for example this week l have been taking polish bread with philadelpha cheese with a slice of quorn pretend meat with a packet of low fat crisps Is this what a diabetes sufferer would take?
l must admit l am floundering with all the information that l am trying to take in,my partner loses her temper with me saying l should stick to everything in moderation that l am overdoing it.
