Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I've only had diabetes the past three years - during this time I've not been in a relationship. Now I am and can imagine having a sexual relationship soon. BUT will sex affect my blood sugars? I've read that it can cause hypos. How do I manage this - i.e. preventing hypo. I'm too embarrassed to speak to my DSN. I'd appreciate any advice from you guys! Thanks from Shy Cath

What do you do when you exercise? And have you ever heard of Sexercise?
I guess it depends on how vigorous the sexercise is, you need to treat it as if you were exercising at the gym/aerobics etc.

Best way to find out it lots of trial and error.......😉

Just make sure you have some hypo resolve near by, as you should have in any normal circumstance anyway...........

But as Monica say, the intensity of activity matters.........realistically your not going to be planning the times when you have sex [at least not at the beginning....:D], so trying to adjust insulin for it is unlikely.............

Just ensure that you have a fast acting hypo treatment (liquid such as luccozade etc) and you meter near at hand... And if you can't test before then test afterwards when you feel it's appropriate...

And looking on the bright side.. You know if you with the right partner because if the ill-timed hypo strikes it produces fits of laughter and not an embarrassing moment...

When on MDI it would be typical for me to suddenly say Oh bugger I've forgotten me Lantus! which kinda wrecked it for both of us.

But Ellie is right - major hilarity same as if one of you breaks wind or gets cramp in their foot right at that moment and re the latter I reckon that's probably why some wimmin are alleged to howl like a wolf or similar - it prolly ain't the intesity of their orgasm - just the pain of the cramp in their leg/hip/foot!

Hi Cath,
Can imagine you feel embarrest I would be the same.If anything it causes me hypers, once I finished and was all in a panic getting out of breathe etc, he thought it was cause he has been so good but when i told him it was a hyper he started laughing I was not amused...

Like boi said its trail and error so just keep trying(i would) :D

I must admit I haven't noticed any great differences but that may be because my mind was on other things at the time. 😱 It never even occurred to me to worry about it, but I will now. 🙄 As for him, he'll be rolling on the floor laughing when I tell him this one.

WHATS SEX 🙄

I can't say I've noticed, I've only been diagnosed 4 months and am married with a young child 😱:D

I have had a few lows during and after, some ignored, some not......

PLAY SAFE..............😉

Hi Cathplum - a really practical approach here - like you, I wasn't in a relationship when I was diagnosed aged 30 years (was and still am female!). Within about 3 years, I met a lovely guy at work, who invited me to go kayaking, which we did, then went back to his house for pasta, sauce & wine - and basically, I never really left! So, my hot tip is to always have both short and long acting insulin (I'm fortunately that both my cartiridges fit in the same pen, so I don't need to carry both, if wanting to keep bulk of kit low) and food with you - fruit pastilles fitted in my shorts pocket for kayaking, but actually a couple were used when other activity became a distinct possibility (trying to be discrete, here!)

Futher to Trophywench's reply to UKJohn: my west Scotland relatives told me "in Edinburgh, sex is what the coal comes in".

Can't really add much but felt compelled to just to prove..

a. I know what it is 🙂

b. I know what effect it has on BGs :D

c. I had a 2am hypo very recently because I didn't take the advice above 🙄

Rob

Oh FGS, another diabetes thing to think about when you really do not want to!!!!! 😡

i've only had one hypo during sex and that was my first time lol.
i wouldn't worry about it!

Thanks for posting Cath, I was always too embarrased! A discussion on the subject at a previous meet caused lots of giggles! I have had several badly timed hypos and they can be really annoying but on the other hand you can't really plan for it can you?!
